So, after exploring various options for my "dead fizzer" (dead meaning the bottom end is gone) I managed to score an absolute bargain. Catch was, it happened to be in Perth. After double checking some logistical options and cost effectiveness (and throwing a few beers around remotely) I figured it was worth the investment overall, so I had it dropped off to my brother's place. The bike still had WA registration which was a bonus although not much use to me as it would need a RW anyway to transfer over so I may as well start again. I figure that out of the two bikes I'll pull together one good one (almost being a "basket case") and have a bunch of spares. Not sure what to do with the second one, perhaps I'll score a cheap engine one day or I might take up a kind offer of a bottom end I received from here. My brother has taken some time to break it down and have it wrapped onto a pallet for a "door to door" pallet transfer, using truckit.net the quoted price was around $180 + GST. Not bad for a whole bike. The tailgate fee takes up $50 of that, if I had a forklift to load/unload either end it would have cost me a little less. Something to bear in mind for others moving around parts bikes perhaps, if you were able to do "business to business" with forklift access you'll save a little. Here are a few photos. I expect the shipment to leave by the end of this week and I should have it in 10 working days or so when I will give an update as to where we are at. Pretty keen to get back on a fizzer, now I have access to club rego anyway haha!
Check the rods for slop when the pistons are at TDC, and tightness when rotating the crank. If all OK then put it together with some penrite assembly lube and chuck it your other fizzer.
My brother reckons it's all OK on the bottom end but I'm not sure about the rest of the engine. The engine number will be different so that may be a RW complication before club rego... haven't looked into that in too much detail yet. The "first fizzer" could probably use a bit of cosmetic TLC so will have to decide how to approach that. The colour scheme is original and I like it better than the black however it's a silver infused cherry red so it's not cheap to respray. Perhaps @my67xr will be interested in doing some paintwork for me in exchange for some parts.....? not too expensive to send stuff to Radelaide from here I wouldn't think Would love to 2 stroke it though need to find an engine to suit. If anyone spots one hit me up because that could be a little awesome.
Your bike is it Silky white (slight silver pearl in sunlight) or is it a straight white (non metallic) ? The Red is pearlescant, that'd be easy enough to match up
I've had it checked by a spray painter it's a silver infused cherry red. You could get close but never the same without going to that level so I assume if it was repainted a red without the silver infusion it would have to be the whole bike to match. By your definition, definitely the first.
I noticed that one on gumtree also - there's a crack on the engine cases by the clutch cover, clutch cover is easily replaceable, the engine case should be able to be welded - good score and clever approach on the shipping, very clever indeed
Silver infused cherry red is just a silver pearl added to the red. Originally it would have been a 3 layer pearl paint job, eg white base coat, silver pearl second coat and cleat coat over the top. Same with the cherry red, cherry base coat, silver pearl coat, then a clear coat
Ah ok, I don't know much about painting. Is it something you could be interested in doing if we barter a bit? @ruckusman yeh I bargained him down a bit and sealed the deal with a carton.. he was a nice enough guy just happy to get it out of his shed. Not sure he realised the value in parting it out (perhaps he couldn't be bothered) but his loss is my gain now. Some further explanations on the shipping, before I sealed the deal I did check logistical options thoroughly - knowing that if it was going to cost me a fortune it was only worth it if I was desperate. My brother acquired a heavy duty (but a bit dated) chep pallet from the local bottle shop and an almost empty roll of stretch wrap (enough to do the job anyway). I also knew the FZR a full bike would weigh around 150kg, a pallet was 30kg and giving it a bit of contingency I advertised it at 200kg. The truckit.net site is basically a bidding process for freight jobs... you can move pretty much anything you want and the freight companies give you their best price. I had 2 quotes, one was $200 the other was $350 - and it was $7.50 for insurance up to $1000. As I mentioned tailgate fees were $50 odd but who cares if it saves me screwing around with a forklift. The pallet with the bike on it was 1200mm x 1200mm x 1000mm and somewhere around the 180kg mark. The trucking company that "won" the business seems pretty good so far, hopefully it gets here in once piece. That remains to be seen but we'll see how we go.
OH you're in for such a disappointment, because it's already in pieces - sorry I just couldn't resist
Christmas come early. Set of carbies (yet to open them up...) Fairings in reasonable condition. They've been resprayed but there's a couple of minor chunks and hairline cracks here and there that I'll repair because I'm pedantic and the colour scheme is a straightforward respray. Few bad repair jobs in spots that I think can sand out OK. The bum piece is junk which is a shame because they're hard to get in good condition but I might be able to salvage it with some elbow grease... Dash set seems OK Lots to sort through, including a carbon fibre exhaust (needs repair though). Was a bit disappointed to see the tank has a coat of rust on the inside, but it hasn't rusted through so will need internal restoring. Smells of some chemical so don't know what was put in there. Typical damage to the nose cone, whoever owned it sprayed the screen which looks crap to me. It's a bit cracked so I might repair it and give it a better coat of paint than what has been done. More to come, for the moment not unhappy with the price I got it for. Engine number is 285*** so conveniently is a 3LN3 the same as my other one.
Forgot to mention - shipped from WA last thursday, arrived today (8:30am) ... about 4-4.5 days transit time. Not bad at all.
So I probably got a bit excited tonight... Here's the inside of the tank, hard to take a photo. All sorts of bits and pieces, fairings are generally OK but there are some bodgey fix up jobs on various pieces in places... Now for the funnest part of fizzers, the carbies.... Not sure if that is degradation from fuel (ie crystallisation) or it's the plastic degrading. It sorta rubs off like sand if you give it some pressure. Either way will need to be cleaned off. I'm outta threebond so that's on the shopping list... So the needles are the later design which is handy I suppose. they all were a bit hard to get out, fused into the emulsion tubes which I noticed were a different design to my other carbies. Judging by the needle condition, once they've had the crap cleaned off of them I think they're probably in pretty good nick considering. 3/4 diaphragms were OK, this one had a tiny little hole in it... suppose that is life. Similar condition to my other carbies in general though, they feel stretched and old. So here is the fun part... the casing damage. Apparently some donkey dropped it and it got a bit broken. After taking off the cover I had to "clean snap" parts of the casing off in order to free the crank to rotate it. The good news from all that is that the bottom end looks pretty good, so does the clutch area etc. I'm thinking JB weld on this one to piece the casing back together but I think the cover is rubbish, there's too much of it missing. Be interested in your thoughts @Murdo as to the best way to fix this. I'd rather not split the case if I can avoid it. Last thing is after having a good look at the carbon fibre exhaust I've tossed it in the bin. I don't reckon it's worth repairing and the carbon fibre is cracked all around where the mounting was attached, plus the inlet pipe is all rusted out. I have an aluminium sports exhaust anyway that I'll repair instead. Now bedtime. Work tomorrow.... bummer!
good score on just the carbs alone - they look to be the ones to get with that needle retention mechanism The rest of the engine may be good parts to make one really good runner from both
Seeing as the area is not structral and you cannot get it welded then a good clean up with thinners/prepsol/etc and JB weld should be ok.
