I just have a quick question: To get a safety cert in QLD, do you need high / low beam? ------- Backstory: Recently picked up a CRF450X which had some headlight mods (not 100% "Stock"). I decided to change the headlight to a KTM style design with a better bulb. Unfortunately it is then I realised that this bike basically has a single beam from the factory yet has a switch block with high and low beam? Somehow the importer who fits them with more wiring (indicators mainly) to get them roadworthy fitted the typical Honda OEM switch block but didn't bother putting in the high beam wires. It's not a huge deal but a little annoying given I need to trace out some wires to the switch block and probably throw in a relay if it needs high and low beam. But I don't really need low beam and would prefer to simply have a hidden on/off switch for trails. My concern is the safety cert guy will see that the high and low beam "don't work" and not pass it. Thoughts?

pretty sure most rego stuff is national now, so yep you need high beam as per the S.A regs "If the motorcycle was manufactured after 1934 and can travel above 60 km/h, it must be fitted with a headlamp or headlamps, with both high and low beam and a mechanism to change them from one to the other"
I must say, I feel like an idiot! So, it seems like I was just confused about the additional wiring loom. Normally on Hondas they have different plugs with different colours that makes it really easy to plug stuff in. The new loom has multiple of the same plug and also same colours so I had two switched around. So it seems like all the hard work is done, I just need to wire it up with some plugs and I think a relay. Sort of annoying though that the extra loom is so confusing! There's almost no information about how the Aussie CRF450Xs were modified to be ADR compliant.

Hmm, I was scouring CRFs Only for informtation... only. Well I knew it wasn't OEM Honda but they do sell them from the Dealers.... so you'd think they make sure the addons are of decent quality. And unfortunately the wiring harness diagrams aren't of the highest quality. Anyway, it was all going well until the damn front indicators stopped working! I had it all working, unplugged it, taped up the loose wires and welp, the front indicators stopped working. The rear work fine. The brake switches also don't seem to work..... I was going to do what old mate did and take off the wiring room and inspect it. The wires are really thin and the whole thing is crazy confusing. Like, pretty sure wires are going up and back down the frame. If it gets too much I'll just try and wire in my TrailTech unit as my major gripe with it all is that the dash doesn't turn on when the bike is off. So you need to start the bike every time to see if the lights work. Makes it a bit hard to work on after work.

Well as anyone would expect, the bike is a can of worms. Frustratingly, the rear brake light wire is green, just like the earth wire. The positive is that there is a number plate light wire though (which I had thought was the brake light wire originally). Annoyingly though, as I suspected from the corrosion the front brake switch (pressure variety) is stuffed. Positively though I have one spare! The next issue (and last one) is after exhaustively testing the indicators was that the wiring seems to be okay, but I think the flasher relay is broken. Today the RHS indicators worked, but the left didn't. Previously the rear worked but the front didn't. Since this isn't a genuine Honda wiring job, they put the relay in the worst possible location... on top of the radiator (literally, touching). I'm no expert but I can't imagine getting that hot would be good. So I'll pop down to Jaycar and get a new one if it doesn't test well (have a YouTube video for that...) ------------------ I did manage to get a wiring diagram off someone but the quality is so low that it's unreadable. And I don't think it really matters if I have it or not - The wires seem good but if somehow the crimps are shorting then they're doing it intermittently. If all else fails I'll just get a separate indicator relay system and then just replace the system with that. The only thing would be setting up a relay for high beam switch! Super annoying though since I have used almost the last of my Japanese bullet connectors on the bike so far...
Grab the relay and new connectors from jaycar when you pick up the flasher can I have a xs 650 I have to wire up from scratch, for the indicators Im thinking of using this (bit pricey but Im not paying ) http://kebandcustomparts.com.au/products/modulators-and-relays/m-flash-digital-flasher-relay as its a custom bobber the owner wants the least amount of wiring possible....
So I got the indicators to work - finally. I started to trace wires manually and realised that on the "new" relay I picked up that the positive end of the relay went to the negative wire. Annoyingly, on the relay that came with the bike has black marks on it so it was hard to tell/remember which pin was what. I plugged in the old relay and it worked! So now I have to wrap the wires up again and then mount everything. I was thinking of relocating several things to the front of of the bike too, because they just get stuffed under the seat.
Well that was short lived. I wrapped up the harness annnndd it stopped working again. So then I unwrapped the harness and tried to see what the go was. It seems like all the relays are fine but somewhere there is an issue with some of the wires. If you bend the birds nest of wires the indicators stop. It's probably the most annoying thing ever. Now I don't know whether to keep going or just give up and try and install the Trail Tech Vapor dash and a new wiring harness? I reckon I could drastically simply it all but just want it to work, kinda don't care how...
