Covers cleaned up & motor back in the frame. The bike came with 2 tanks, unfortunately the matching tank (which was new) had been badly damaged & left to rust out without ever being used still has the tag on it. I tried to pop it out using the cheap ding puller, which was no match, i then tried compressed air & that popped the bottom of the tank out instead, might need to source a new tank.
If you have a Mig welder.. tack weld some nails onto the ding and use a slide hammer to pull most of the dent out... that is way too deep for paintless dent removal.
Cut a hole in the bottom, knock out the dent, weld the cutout back together. The bottom blow out is just extra fuel capacity!
grind bottom of vee, solder brass washers on at right angles and use slide hammer. unsolder and bog finish.
Compressed air may have worked if you bare metaled that dent and heated it up with an oxy or lpg torch so it was glowing red in that area first. But you'd have to make sure it has never had fuel in it, also depend's on how bad the rust was too i guess ? Anyway the bike is looking really good now, when you cleaned the engine with the Dremel was that using a stainless wheel or brass wheel in it ?
All good thanks Kiff, the other tank is fine inside, I have decided to make this a longer term project & re-paint in the tri-colour, the bike feels unfinished as it sits. It popped back in place easily enough luckily, the tank wouldn't sit right on the R+R & airbox otherwise. @my67xr i had a kit similar to the one above, both brass & stainless with 3 different style wheels, I used both brass & stainless on the motor with lots of inox, what's your thoughts with the stainless on cast aluminium? I did think about galvanic reaction, the wheels are very light, you can't push too hard & it doesn't scratch the Al.
