Suzuki Across power sometimes/ sometimes not

Hey all

I have owned a 1997 Across for about a year and a half now and it's been great...

As far as I knew it was as powerful as it was going to be, but about 6 months ago I was open throttle coming up into around 11000rpm in 3rd gear and the bike suddenly took off (power increase of about 20%, really noticeable) and then nothing after that so I didn't think anything of it.

a couple of days ago it did the same thing again except all through 1st and 2nd and then cut out again coming into 3 rd gear, instead the normal dribble from 9000 to 15000rpm it hammered through all the way to 18000rpm without question and I had never felt acceleration like that before on this bike (and then it hasn't done it since)

My question is in this topic is; what on earth could cause something like this????

to add to clarify: it seems to miss a little below 7000rpm under heavier load but then smoothes off over 7000rpm and then slows off again over 9-10000rpm except for these rare times that it absolutely takes off, normally all I can hear is induction noise (like it's choking for fuel/air/spark)...

mine has been pretty ordinary since i bought it and had the same issue once with the power. i did put some injection cleaner in the other day and then tuesday night it all of a sudden came to life. havent ridden it since cause of the rain and im a pussy but i did start it yesterday and it felt completly different from when i first got it.

 

I found lowering the needle in the carb had similar effect and increased fuel economy.
Just droping it one notch is enough to make a massive difference.

 

I'm with you Shimmy, lowering the needle one notch is equivalent to factory original setting. Based on age and wear this would be pretty close. We tend to forget how many times the needle moves up and down.

 

ill get in there soon and have a go. it still coughs a bit but has kept that power from the other night so thats a good thing. last time i was going to have a look in the carbies the 4 screws ontop felt like butter and wanted to strip the head, so i am a bit hesitant if thats the first thing i encounter then what else is it hiding lol.
