Info OEM Replacement Piston Rings

    Hi All:

    It took a tremendous amount of work, but I was able to convince the original OEM of piston rings, Riken, to make me a custom run of replacement rings for the NLA inline 4, 250cc motorcycles. I have currently been approved to make any sizes of NL3 (Yamaha FZR250), and KAZ (Honda CBR250RR MC-22). I am waiting for some Kawasaki and if any Suzuki parts might be of interest.

    I have to order a minimum of 200 sets (50 engines) of each size. So, before I have a lot of stock in sizes that people don't care about, could you guys please let me know the following:

    1): How many of you are out there that are hurting for rings?

    2): What are the most used sizes of rings; STD, +0.25, +0.50, +0.75, +1.00?

    Looking forward to a response ASAP.

    Yes, the 3LN rings will be of the first to get ordered. How many sets do you think you would personally be interested in? Do you know of others interested in 3LN? Are you looking for std or oversized rings?

    It's a little tough to get 200 sets of rings made based on only 1 interested party. Do you have any feedback of others looking for rings for these bikes as well? Otherwise, they would be $6,000.00 USD for 1 engine set. But, that would also include 49 spare engine sets.

    I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to come to AUS to build your engine. I would do it for the cost of a plane ticket, and a place to stay.

    Seriously, get a group of people together for an engine building seminar, and I will show you all how to build your engines perfectly. I want to go to AUS very much. So, if the trip were paid for by a group of people willing to chip in to cover travel costs, I would do it.

    Hmm... I would go for a set or two however I don't think there's 400 running FZR 3LN's in the whole world.

    Guys just to clarify - when Mike says a set of rings he means the three rings for one cylinder, therefore 4 sets per engine

    So I think his target of 200 sets is quite achievable

    I read that ^ as a set of ring's does 4 piston's,
    but yeah 50 engine's should be acheivable

    Ok so my comment still stands... can we find 50 running FZR250 3LN's in the world? Even that might be optimistic.

    I'd be down for a couple of sets though probably.

    The problem with that is, I am told, the ZXR250C rings are still available. So, I would be making the ZXR250A rings-if the tooling is available. I'm having the manufacturers look into that now.

    Yes, 200 cylinder sets, or 50 four-cylinder motorcycles.

    If I start ordering 2T twin cylinder rings, then I have to find 100 customers.

    Not wanting to be argumentative however Mike rebuilt Dave Moss's CBR250 with chinese pistons & rings, said that besides the machining differences the pistons were virtually indistinguishable from OEM

    I think it was from his posts here concerning Daves Moss's CBR where he described the demise of the rings however...

    Thus began his quest for better quality rings

    thats true to an extent, however when i looked into this a few months back i was quite apprehensive about putting $50 chinese piston rings in my engine, to have an oem option available at this price point would be a major plus imo.

    Meh, got them in the phaser- it's basically an FZR and so far no issue. And they weren't $50 they were around $20 US for a set of 4.

    1937 Royal Enfield 250, CF Moto 250 V5, Honda's XL250, CBR250, FT500 plus a few others.
    The ones in my CBR's are doing well with no noticeable drop in performance.
