I'm deeply jealous - I've been trying for a new helmet for 6 weeks now and I can't find a damn thing that fits. I'm very glad I am not in a rush to find one but, not for the first time, I do think I must have a head shaped just like the monster from Alien :)

I went to MCAS and treated myself to a new lid, an Arai Vector II in gloss black plus an iridium visor. Also picked up some new handlebar grips for the ZXR, got $100 off my total spend. Very good high quality helmet, it poos all over the rjays ones I've owned.. Fits well (including glasses), nice and quiet, sufficient venting.

IMG_6492.JPG Mines a Bell Star Carbon- picked it up a while back. Wish it weren't so noisy- my RF1100 is way quieter- but tougher to take off multiple times a day.

Some dude snagged the pic at an autocross one day when I was using it in a car, despite its M rating

I picked up a few set's of helmet mount's, adapter arm's and a couple of j hook's off ebay to mount my helmet camera to my helmet
Tried it out a few time's and the video's are a lot better, give's you the rider's view on thing's
I had been using a chest mount strap and it would be half through my windscreen and half above the screen
This j hook setup is the go.
Hopefully the SA police give us the all clear to legally use them, some SA police officer's say it's ok, some are issuing warning's or fine's
But a lot of the SA police motorcycle rider's are using them so i can't see how it's illegal
And to see charge's in Victoria for helmet cam's have been dropped after being taken to court recently, i don't think the police can do anything now

Finally! After more than 6 months of looking I finally found a helmet that fits me properly. I was all prepared to buy a Shoei, Arai, Bell or Shark (although there are interesting rumours about Shark ATM) but I couldn't find anything that fit me well enough to make me fork out the dollars. So, today, I discovered the HJC RPHA 11 was just the ticket. I appreciate that the graphics are not going to be to everyone's taste but I like it and it fits! Plus it came with a clear visor and Pinlock included in the price, which was discounted $100. I'm a happy camper. I'm looking forward to a ride tomorrow to suss it out on the road.

This is both the love of and bane of my life! The Shoei GT Air (Grandeur graphic). I did everything you're supposed to do. Tried it on in different sizes. Tried it on in two different shops at two different times of the day. Spent an hour wandering around a shop in the thing. Yeh, no. Got my one in and it didn't fit! Too, too tight. Bought thinner pads and popped them in and it's workable, but not awesome the way it was in both shops. So frustrated. I thought I did everything right - still ended up with a crappy fitment.

On the other hand, it does do exactly what I need it to do. Protects my head, has an internal sun visor (I am ridiculously short-sighted and must wear either glasses or contacts at all times if I want to see anything, so I really do need that visor if I'm wearing my glasses as per normal), pinlock (gets very foggy here), washable liners, well vented...and super pretty. You can't see it in a still, but all those pale looking graphics? Yeh, they change from purple through to green depending on the light.

Oh, and so, so noisy. I had to get ear plugs. Will not be purchasing again in 3 years time. Sad panda.

Oh hai...super interested in this. I have kinda been thinking about the shark D-SKWAL Dharkov in purple to replace my current bane. What rumours are you talking about here?

    P.S. Love your helmet.

Thanks @Mymia :) Only rumours, I have nothing concrete but the shop I was in told me that the Shark Australia website is not working for orders, they haven't had an order supplied by Shark in four months and both the WA and Australian reps are not answering phone calls or emails. I would stress that I don't know if any of this is true but the shop is a big player in the helmet game here in Perth and I was perfectly prepared to buy a Shark if it fitted well, irrespective of the price and I looked at cheaper helmets as well so it wasn't just that they were trying to get me to spend more money. I came very close to buying a helmet that was half the price of the Shark I was looking at so they would have made less money if I had bought that one. If what they say about Shark Australia is true it looks like they may be having some problems at the moment.

On the left an AGV K5 bought last year, very comfortable but a bit noisy, on the fight an Arai Rapide 2 with a custom paint job consisting of a replica of a painting titled 'The Ladder of Escape' by the Spanish painter Joan Miro... but you all recognised that straight away didn't you? helmets red.jpg

Just a couple of quick notes about this HJC RPHA 11 now that I've used it for a week. I'd like to preface this by noting that all I can compare it to is my two old Rjays (GP3 and GP3+) and a terrible RXT.
This helmet is incredible quiet, for me. My guess is that noise is based a lot on your head shape because it seems you can get contrary opinions about noise levels with every helmet. So, for my narrow (but tall - and no-one ever seems to mention that when talking about head shapes) this helmet was a revelation. With the visor fully open it's still quieter than my RJays was with the visor closed. And, excuse me if this sounds weird, but all the noise sounds like it's outside the helmet, instead of inside it. I can't think of another way to describe it. As an added bonus, this helmet makes my bike sound awesome :) It seems to moderate the treble and amplify the bass so it sounds like I've changed my muffler.
The ventilation is incredible. Riding in the chill morning I could feel the air flow over my scalp and come in through my beard. It was nice to know I could have shut them down but I just enjoyed the sensation. The top vents are controlled by little rollers, with detents I can feel even through my gloves. It's novel system but seems to work well.
The lining is plush and comfortable, which makes my balding noggin happy.
    It's not all good news.
The visor fogs up faster than you would believe possible, even on mild days. Obviously, once underway that clears up but cracking the visor at every stop is a bit of a pain. The first detent (so, almost, but not quite closed) is supposed to be an anti-fog setting but, in my experience, the visor needs to be opened at least one more stop to clear the fog when sitting at lights. The helmet did come supplied with a PinLock so I guess I'll be fitting that.
The D-rings are that squared-off type, instead of rounded like my old RJays. It's a trivial thing but i still notice it every time.
But, honestly, it's a great helmet, at least for my head, and I'm very happy with it. I think the thing that surprised me the most was how much I enjoyed it at freeway speeds. With all the other helmets I've owned, head-checks at 100kph gave my neck a bit of extra twist as the helmet aerodynamics changed with the side facing into the line of travel, instead of the front. With this helmet I almost couldn't tell the difference. Even the noise level didn't seem to change. I found myself doing extra head-checks on the highway today, just because it was such an unexpected pleasure.
Yes, it's very expensive for a HJC at $900 retail (although that's the Marvel-approved version; there may be cheaper ones in plain colours) but, another pleasant surprise, on the RPHA series, HJC supply a five year warranty, as opposed to their normal 12 months.
I spent months and months researching and trying helmets and I'm stoked that this HJC worked out so well.

Thanks for that info, @jazzhunt . As much as I have a love/hate thing with my Shoei, I'd definitely be reluctant to buy a helmet from a manufacturer who most likely wouldn't be around in 5 years time. That's a real shame.

This is custom-made to order Simpson Super Shark. It is based on the Super Speedway helmet used in Indy Car with modifications for motorcycle needs. It's very light and developed to naturally move to level and straightforward. In 1992 Simpson sponsored my 250GP racing as well as a world superbike rider and made us these helmets. I am only aware of six of these three were mine and this is my last one (never used).
