hand honed the bmw r65 master cylinder.piece of dowel with slot cut in end and fine emery paper fitted into slot and rolled to diameter of bore. lubricated with washing up liquid. rotated by hand and emery washed under tap and bore sloshed out with metho. rubbers looked servicable so reassembled and brakes bled. do far so good. filled a spare fzr radiator with clr so will drain and hose out tmr.
Not that it's a 250 (sorry) but... Bought some Carbon Engine Case Covers from TYGA for my RC390. Decided they needed my creative touch as they cover the Orange 'Racing KTM' Stamps on the Cases... so, designed and cut, then (very fiddly) hand-applied vinyl graphics with a clear topcoat. Can't help myself. Now back to work!
Thanks Risky. Yeah, involves being patient and careful. Type was so small on this that I had to use a magnifying glass to 'weed' (which means pick out) the lettering!! Pretty happy with the result though. Cheers.
I bought a gs500 for wrecking , the previous owner blew the engine and fitted another , after hooking everything up, the bike wouldn’t start, he left it for 6 months then put it up for sale, it arrived with the Loom loosely placed on top of the engine and the tank and airbox in a separate box. I thought I would take a look at it this morning , with a jump pack connected the gauges would light up but nothing from the start button . I bridged the clutch perch switch and she turned over , I thought great , let’s add some fuel. As the tank wasn’t hooked up, I used a custom aux tank (tomato sauce bottle) and filled the fuel line enough to fill the bowls. I hit the starter and she cranked over backfired and blew the carbs clean off their manifolds , I was like oh sheeeet After changing my pants, I went back and refitted the carbs, swapped the wires to each coil, stood in front of the bike and hit the start button, she fired up , never seen that big of a backfire before , scared the bejesus out of me . Mental note to self , always check what someone else has done before attempting to start a bike Not long after that I received a call from a guy leaving the country on Monday to take up a job in LA , he was very keen to offload his mc19 so I bought it , he was even trying to sell me his car which I declined. I will service it and get some new tyres then it will be up for sale
My older brother spent a few weeks in hospital after a car backfired and lit him up, melting his shirt on on to him. He also had a reaction to the burn cream, too. Backfires can be serious.
I had that happen to an XL350 many years ago out in the bush. Blew the carb out of the rubber manifold and I had to get two green sticks to lever it back into place. Started fine afterwards.
Made a choke bracket for the Honda to go with my new choke cable. Original one had been butchered and chromed. Then fitted an alloy gear shift arm (eBay bargain) and rod-end to make the gear change lever actually work. Yes, original one had been butchered and chromed. Will do until I make the entire foot control units later.
Well the Across finally came off the lift today.. all the fairings are back on it.. .Still not running but I am sure it is only the the pilot jets (I forgot to remove them last time I had them apart) that is stopping it from running. If someone comes along wanting to buy it as is I wont worry about sort ing them out.. if not, eventually I will strip them down again.. I put the CB400 up on the stand and next weekend I will start on the SRX again.. a few minor mods to the frame for the 3WP rear sets (the mounts are slightly different) and a mount for the rear brake reservoir... maybe I will get my TIG set up and play with it to get the hang of it again.. last time I used a TIG it was a rather expensive bit of kit with a pedal.. my one is a cheapy so no pedal.. should be fun to play with..
Spare time is like Gold at the moment, so I had some this weekend and thought I'd better have a look at the 1989 ZXR250A I have entered in the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club (VJMC) National Rally in Tamworth next week. I pull the cover off it and grab my Log Book (Club Reg) and realise the bike has been sitting for 17 months and it has half a tank of fuel and the battery is connected...Farck! I know it's going to be bad, but I trickle charge the battery while looking for a paid rego slip (Log book rego expired 8 months ago). Find paid rego (phew) and drain fuel. New fuel and she starts. Running rough, so decide to take her for a ride to run some fuel through the carbs and check for anything else that might be an issue. Plenty of problems, so a tear down is in order. Carbs need a service; idle and air issues, front end stutters under braking and tank is full of rust. Yesterday, carbs off and full rebuild. Will do front end and tank next weekend. See you in Tamworth fellow VJMC members.
Yes. I should be getting there sometime Thursday. Can you store a bike at your place if I buy something in the Newcastle area? And, I don't mean outside in the yard.
i meant in tamworth as dennis and i are riding up on thursday the 1st.taking my bikes up this thurs and coming back sunday on train and riding up to keep dennis company and run his motor in.how are you coming up?
Put the carbs back on the ZXR for Tamworth VJMC National Rally. I think these rubbers might have been sitting in my carb drawer too long. @maelstrom is there a way to "shrink" these?
Linkin just brought up the same issue with me which is very odd. Only ever had one mould. Though I will sort it out, for now I would suggest try a bit of contact cement on the carb side.
Thanks Blair. I've used these kits before (not the ones in the picture) and I don't recall them being oversized. All of these seem to have an issue on the RHS. I will cut and glue as recommended by group.
Finished the ZXR250 for VJMC Rally next week. Front end was scary under braking (porpoising). The good doctor suggested checking rotors for warping. He was on the right track. Turns out the bike had picked up some moisture while sitting around doing nothing and the RHS floating disk had decided to behave like a solid unit due to rusting between the inner disk and the brake rotor. Cleaned this up as best I could. Test ride showed there is still a little bit of porpoising, but nothing like before. I have a new set of wave front disks, but want to keep the bike as close to factory spec as possible for VJMC event. See you in Tamworth.
