To be honest I love that lampoon of the noisy exhaust - it's brilliant - yeah he's a cock, but that is pretty much the point Over 2 decades ago there was a British comedian with a phony mobile phone a metre tall and he'd walk into tranquil situations, the damn thing would ring and then he'd spend the next few minutes hollering into it at the top of his voice and the conversations were very inappropriate e.g in the chemist looking for haemmorhoid and yakking about his roids and how they were acting up etc
Yes I think you are quite right, this bike was a Jap import into New Zealand. Quite a different spec to the tube framed bikes. By the way I totally agree with what you say about some of the weird performance specs out there, it was little Ol me who started the ball rolling to get the Yam SRX 250 specs sorted out, I have one & it is an awesome powerful lightweight bike. Thanks for your comments.
No unfortunately for me the ignition & alternator are on the other side, but hey I don't know how far the explosion or possible fire went to, having said that, there is no obvious signs of paint damage etc on the engines externals.
Yes, I did read the thread with you and Andy going back and forth. Having owned several SRX250's over the years, I was going to interject, but decided to let the thread run. Andy's bike is the more modern model, which I never owned, so I wasn't 100% sure of the spec. The most accurate SRX250 spec I have is the one that states 32hp @ 10,000rpm (see attached)
Mine is actually a hybrid. Started life as a 1987 SRX250 51Y and when finished it will be a close copy of the (Japan only) 1991 SRX250 3WP. The engine in standard form would be identical to all SRX models up to 1987. Mine will have the 350 barrel, head and carby’s. Mikes VT will be a nice bike, I suspect fried electrics from the TIG welding but it could be really hard to track down without having bits like CDI, ignition sensor etc to swap in. I am not sure how different the electrics were between this one and the later VTR250’s. There is a full service manual in the sealed section. That may help with any tests etc to track it down. Yes, although the engine has spark I haven't yet determined whether the timing is correct. & as you state, without proper testing gear you can waste a lot of time & money replacing this & that. I do have workshop manuals, (Downloaded from this awesome site), so when I get a next (spare ) moment I will try & methodically work through the electrical diagnosing testing, Man I hate modern electrics, bring back the good old magnetos, points coils & condensers any day.
Hey guys I have a VT250 F 19882 which I am trying to get to start after putting 2 bikes to make one and now it wont start . Has spark and fuel. I did put on the CDI units from the other bike but dont know if they are good or not. Are the units interchangeable and would they stop starting? Any ideas appreciated.
Have you done a resistance test on the pick-up coil(s) off the timing wheel (or are they on the stator on those bikes ) and the same test on the HT coil (or coils if you have two)? Pick up coil will usually be between 180-250 ohms and the HT if it is 2 terminal type might have to check a w/shop manual but around 0.4-0.7 ohm primary coils and anywhere between 8-14kohm on the HT side but these can vary between brands
Thanks Ill run the checks tomorrow but my feeling is the CDIs could be dodgy as there is good spark. Anyway lets see. thanks bud
