    Why? The whine? They all do that, induction noise. A bit like the modern Triumphs.

    The price paid for the bike was fair, given I knew everything about it. The asking price for the bike was, well, 'tell 'im he's dreaming' :)

    I have heard that sort of whine come from gear driven OHC setups before but that one sounded different, that could just be the recording.
    That Dan Moto is a nice tone, could be a Plod magnet though ☹️

    Is the chain slack on the rear cog because the chain is worn or because the sprocket is flogged?

    It can be both. The rollers on the chain are what need to be lubricated. If they are dry, they wear and will be loose on the sprocket. At the same time, the sprocket can wear, the chain becomes recessed into it, the gaps between teeth are larger.

    Same as timing chain, measure 10 links and see if it's within limits. Sprockets are cheaper to replace

    Some slow progress on the R6.

    I replaced the K&N air filter, only to find that the airbox bottom was also butchered. Nuts recessed in the plastic pulled up and out from ham fisted idiots. 2nd hand airbox bottom for $45 off ebay on the way. Will get some new airbox to carb seals in my next order from Japan.

    I was swapping the tanks over and servicing the fuel tap, which needs the smiley face gasket that Yamaha don't sell, only a whole fuel tap. So a $30 repair kit on the way.

    I ordered a few small bits a while ago to make the bike a little bit nicer - some indicator lenses and a gear shift rubber. By no means will this be a nut and bolt restoration, but they're things you'll see every day, and they're cheap so why not.

    Just a tad cleaner hey? Glad that I fitted a fuel filter.


    The only fault with this new tank is a small ding which I am prepared to live with, if it means not taking carbs off every 2 months to clean rust out.

    Wow. The inside of the tank is immaculate, that looks like it was a good buy...dents can be fixed an painted...rust like the original can’t be fixed...

    Worth every cent of the $295 it cost.

    The original tank needed painting too, so it would be a strip, de-rust, repair any holes, coat the inside, paint and decal job. Lot of time, effort and money there.

    Got a whole heap of stuff done today. Unfortunately no pictures just yet.

    Replaced the rear brake reservoir and seal
    Replaced all the fuel lines, filter, and fitted new tank - no leaks (thank god!)
    Replaced the front and rear tyres with some Metzeler M7 Sportec RR's, and dynamically balanced both wheels.
    Replaced the chain and sprockets.

    I still need to do both sets of wheel bearings, but work only supplied me a single front and single rear wheel bearing... fairly certain I remember asking for kits :) Oh well, just have to wait. Still waiting a rear disc as well.

    And unfortunately it looks like I have to do me least favourite job again, fork seals. The seal doctor worked for a bit, but they have started leaking again. Curses!

    So this is why the timing cover was leaking. There was no gasket. Unfortunately the gasket I ordered was incorrect, so I'll have to order another. In the mean time, I have done the silicone rubber bodge job as work had no gasket paper lying around. The bike is not being ridden at the moment anyway, and I didn't apply two tubes of the stuff so it will do for now.

    Which is what this is :) It's the gasket for the cover on the other side where the gear selector shaft runs, for some reason it is listed as a 'carb' on the parts list.

    The gasket I need is 5EB-15456-00

    I might pull the black coating off the rims at some stage, then polish them like @my67xr did to his fizzer rims
