So now I have somehow fixed the Across. (I dont know how, I just kept doing things till it got better). My Father wants to help me work ln a few bikes, and I do prefer the little 250 inline 4's. My question is I have a couple of cheap choices for starting points up here, either a Fzr250, or another Across. Any thoughts on what would be better, or more fun? I know i have idea with the Across now, but am willing to take the risk on the fzr. Both are same price and similar condition from what I cen get so far, will be inspecting prior to purchase of course.

Challenge yourself and go the FZR .... the Across is something like 20kg heavier and not an RR (race replica) .... the FZR 3LNs have an aluminium frame (2KRs are steel) .... and redline at 18,500 RPM ..... they are fast and nimble

Get it running right and go out and redline it in first and second then get back to me ..... :crazypilot:

    Inline 4s = carbys, carbys ... then carbys :D

Early across were also 45hp. A little heavier than the cbr/zx/fzr but they are no slouch & perform really well IMO.

I was just looking up the background of 'R' and'RR' ...... interesting

Hows your city bike racer going? :fuckyou:

Letter designations—CBX, GSXR, etc.—often stand for something in particular, often a phrase that denotes the bike's purpose or inspiration. Suzuki’s GSX-R supposedly stands for “Grand Sport eXperimental- Racing”, Honda’s CB stands for “City Bike”, and CBR is short for “City Bike Racer” (or “racing”) not for “cross beam racer”. Interestingly, the “RR” that follows Honda’s contemporary sport bikes simply indicates that it's a sporty, race-oriented model and doesn’t actually stand for “race replica” or “race ready”. That said, Honda doesn’t mind the rumor because It’s good marketing. The RR on Ducati’s Desmosedici RR does in fact stand for “race replica, so there's that.

My first bike years aho was a zxr250c. Loved the little beast, but the complexity of the fzr carbys are steering more towards the across. I look at the fzr wednesday afternoon, apparently its mechanically good and cosmetically crap. If it actually is as it has been described it will be a decent buy. But i always take sellers descriptions with a grain of salt. Lol

Couldn't understand a word he said, but interesting that he picked the ZXR at the end.

So I know this may upset some fans, but from what I can see here and elswhere the fzr's seem to need more love more regularly tha most of the other little 4's. Is this a reasonable thought or am I just seeing the bad side?

They look good, and I have a spray painter in the family thankfully, so the tank is covered. I am more concerned with the mechanical side. Its a 2kr model so it seems more simple than the 3ln series.

Well its like many forums and groups ... 99% of posts are when someone experiences a problem ... not too many people start a discussion on how perfect their bike is running or how good it looks just out of the blue

The FZRs have their own set of problems .... and the ZXR is the same but just different things .... at a guess Id say the CBR is the least troublesome and parts are easy to obtain which helps over their life
Not many GSXRs about so they dont come up very often

Alot of the problems are self inflicted by POs (previous owners) who lack any mechanical or technical skills watsoeva .... but occasionally its 'design fault' , like the emulsion tubes in the earlier FZR 3LN carbs or the cam chain tensioner in the ZXRs

This forum and its members have solved and found solutions to alot of these quirks of engineering of the inline 4s over the last few years .... the FZR BDST carbs are a great example of this.
Of course it still needs the person implementing the improvements and maintaining these bikes in his backyard to have the skills and know what they are doing.

Ive owned my FZR for over 6 years and its still not 100% .... but I dont put in the effort needed much anymore to sort it .... Ive done thousands of ks and many weekends away on it and its still a blast to ride

I have never owned an Across or even ridden one .... but it seems to throw up its share of 'ongoing problems' also

As much as riding is the ultimate gain and enjoyment ... restoring, renovating , fixing , maintaining and battling the problems and idiosyncrasies of an old bike , run a close second for me.

Yeah, organised to look at it tomorrow after I finish for the day. I am thinking I will need to repair the fairings and prep and paint them. If I can fix instead of replace, I might make it hot pink yet.

I was contemplating taking a battery and some fresh fuel to see how "mechanically good" it was.
