Maximum HP is about 16,000rpm, so not much point revving out much past there.

Hi Guys, some interesting reading in here.
I am keen to know what sort of real power you are able to extract from your MC22s.
My little MC22 (1992) that I use on the track, is basically standard, has 56,000 kms on it and has been tuned on the dyno to give 42bhp at the wheel.
It pulls hard to about 17,000 - 18,000 rpm. Beyond that it is just for giggles. Max power is at about 16,000.

I seen various videos that would indicate that some bikes are able to generate useful power beyond 18,000. Or is this just tacho error?

Increasing rpm does nothing if torque is dropping too quickly. You have to raise the rpm at which peak torque occurs to lift the hp. You can do this tuning the inlet, exhaust and camshaft to function at a higher rpm, but if the cylinder head cannot flow that volume then all you will do is destroy what little power you have down low. Also load increases at the square of the speed, so at 18000 rpm the load on your engine will be almost 30% greater than it is at 16000.

Yes, yes, yes. Know all that. Have modified many an engine.
Just wanting to know if there are any engine tricks that people may have found over the years (ignition/carb combinations, etc).
I am not interested with internal mods to this engine.
I know that the later engines had some restrictions (port diameters and ignition retarding). My machine is an early one, so technically 45bhp (at the crank) out of the box.
Just want to know how others bikes perform.

You can bolt some FCR's on it, but they cost the planet. I am working on a different version.

Yep. Like most, I don't have planets to spare. Money spent elsewhere might be more effective.

A few of us run pencil coils (COP). You don't get any more horsepower, but you're guaranteed charge ignition across the rev range right up to nutty levels.

Agree with that. Better to spend money on suspension, brakes and reducing weight than the engine.

What coils do you run? Are they an easy install? Might be an option for my Tribute bike to tidy things up around the engine.

Where do people cut weight from on the MC22? What is a sensible target weight for these bikes? Ignoring the obvious answer, like going on a diet.

I run ninja 300 coils. Size, primary and secondary windings all suit the ZXR. @GreyImport has posted the link to the "how to" pages and info about different coils.

You need to take your bike to Gunnedah and get yourself a timeslip to see how fast a 42rwhp MC22 can go

Removing weight from your bike wont make a huge difference,
losing 10kg will make your bike around 1/10 of a second quicker over the 1/4 mile.

Gunnedah is a long long way for me to go. Not likely to happen soon I am afraid. :(:(

No drag strip's close to you ?

This page has a good calculator that you can put your info into and it will give you an idea on what your bike could run
@Frankster or @Murdo , how close do your number's work out when using this calculator, to what time's you actually ran
If you enter your combined weight of your bike and rider, and enter you time it will calculate how many horsepower it took to run that time.
The calculation's are a little off as they're calculated on a perfect run with no losses between gear change's and shifting at optimal rev 's, no wind etc etc

Calder is the closest track to me.
Have driven the international circuit and Thunderdome quite some time ago. Have also had a go on the drag strip in a car but honestly can not remember times.
Have run 1/4 mile in my little race car (Suzuki GSXR1100 powered) back in 2013 & 2003 at Geelong Speed trials (on public roads). Best time I managed was 10.9.
Not likely to take the bike to Calder, it is very poorly maintained these days and little used.
Also past a few short blasts on a track. My last time at Broadford road circuit in Victoria I got 6 x 15min - 20min runs on track and covered a lot of laps. Banf for buck is good. :):):):)

@Frankster ... heres some photos of the TDRA meets from back in the early 90s .... Goddards Lane , opposite the Airport off Gunnedah Rd .... supposedly only 2 with the big boys and a few other local ones then the council sold the land where the spectator mound was and that was the end of it and it went to Gunnedah airport.
I went to one and remember Brays burnouts .... crazy

Calculator isn't too bad, but not 100% accurate. I'd be super stoked if I could run an 8.29ET for the 1/8 mile. Basically, when I key in my best ET, the calculator says my engine is making 34hp (which might be right, but unlikely).
