Hi so after a long period of my mc22 working at it should it decided to strand me today. Basically the battery went flat while riding and when i popped the seat i smelt burning plastic and the starter solenoid connector looks like the one in this image (Courtesy of Xcite Bikes eBay). I am just wondering what the cause of this is? Ill be purchasing the replacement thats in the photo but i dont want this happening again and screwing me over. Cheers
Usually, high resistance. Those older style plastic plugs are prone to corrosion as they have no weather proofing. The joint becomes high resistance, leading to overheating, voltage drop, higher resistance in a bad feedback loop. The female pins inside the terminal blocks can also become loose over time / repeated use and lead to arcing, which burns out the plastic plug. Commonly occurs on wiring with high amperage, so charging system and starting systems are usually the ones that will exhibit problems.
Mc22’s are prone to burning out regulators causing batteries to go flat, i’d pull the plug on your reg and check that also for burnt wires , strange that the plug to your starter solenoid went , they usually hold up pretty well
i pulled the regulator wires and they looked fine, no visible burning or corrosion . I checked it with a multimeter and the resistance to each pin was around 0.565 give or take
Okay good news about the reg wires, the next step is to do the diode test on the reg , then check the ac output on each phase of the stator , hopefully it is just a tired battery.

Thanks i got new terminals im going to try first but ill definitely be looking into the stator. My reg resistance was fine by what i could tell.
So the new solenoid is in! I am yet to test it as i cant jump start the bike at the moment, here are the photos of the plug before and after ( I had to butcher the original plug to get it out because it was all melted together) Old: New:
quick update after changing the solenoid. Nothings changed still not charging while running. The voltage goes up slightly to 10.5v when i rev it but no useful charge is going in
Should be able to check the AC across the stator output. It is usually Reg-Rec, if you plan on keeping it fit a Shindengen Mosfet jobby. Many forum members have fitted them and you can get used ones off high end Yamahas. They are mentioned in a lot of the threads on this forum.
Problem has been fixed! New rectifier installed and now the battery is reading around 13.5 volts when the bikes running. Thanks for the suggestions!
