Project VT250 my first build

    Yep if I can't find an alternative I will definately give that a try albeit starting with some thick aluminium alloy plate.

    Cut and folded an aluminium tray for under seat area. This may be temporary as I only had 1.6mm on hand and is heavier than I would like but it's a starting point to tidy up the wiring. Lots to do there, shortening and lengthening to make it all fit and relatively hidden. I want the front end to be as clean and simple as possible. Have no idea where a battery will go at this stage, maybe the petrol tank will be more modified than initially planned lol. And yes, I'm aware of the inherent dangers of battery terminals close to steel that has petrol behind it. Definately wouldn't use lithium battery in that location but with the right precautions a lead acid or gel battery will be safe enough.

    Not getting much done (stupid low functioning depression) but did relocate coils to what I think is a better position, aesthetically at least. Were previously mounted vertically in full view. Please overlook my amateur welding on mounting tab. I will now have to relocate fuel tap as it will interfere with coils, bugger. That's ok as I'll do away with the bulky vacuum deal. My basic replacement from ctx200 has a much smaller thread to fit to tank so needed work anyway. 20220705_133850.jpg 20220705_134341.jpg

    Had a wee fiddle with wiring today, trying to work out shortest routes and locations of various bits. The big plastic pin connector thingy most wires plug into was deleted and although it currently looks like someone spilled a bowl of spaghetti on the bike, I think it will be an easier job going forward. wiring.jpg

    Got me thinking but my brain fog was too thick. If I slide forks down through clamps and raise the back end height to match (not the adjustment of forks as they are angled but the true height increase) then am I correct in assuming there would be no steering geometry change? Btw the fork and steering axis are parallel, that is important to consider. I figure fitting larger wheels would increase the trail a bit but would like to do in the future if I can find some used alloy spokey dokeys cheap.

    I'm getting an ever increasing feeling that these projects aren't really that welcome here and that stock, restored plastic fantastics are what this site is all about. I've read mocking comments about builds that start and then are never heard from again, but perhaps they read through the cafe/bobber/fugger section and decide to move to a more likeminded and supportive community?

    Any projects are welcome here and as with anything in life everyone has an opinion and as long as its not a personal attack then I cant see a problem.
    Many many members only last 5 minutes here , make a thread or post once and are never heard of again ... others are part of the furniture ... thats how forums/online groups work .... and theres many reasons for that .
    And if the reason being is that people dont like their "project" or comments offend , then they need to go elsewhere for help.
    Ive been on the internet since it was invented and if you want to be out there in the public domain then you need to be a little thick skinned .... and also realise that written comment doesnt always come across as was intended.

    Guilty as charged. Yes, I think the vast majority of 'cafes' are poorly executed by beginners and they are not functional motorcycles. I have zero interest in them for that reason. However, I have posted a cafe when it has been well done in a professional manner. But I am just one person, and I don't speak for anyone else.

    This is incorrect. My Yamaha R4 project for example

    is in no way stock. There are also many other project bikes that are not just restorations. There are quite a few highly skilled and experienced posters on this forum and they do chime in when something grabs their eye. We also work together to solve problems when we can. The majority of the "cafe" posters on this forum have been about trying to get their bikes to run with pod filters. In most cases they ignore the advice we give them, give up, or just disappear.

    Finally to your question. Yes, you will not change the steering geometry, but you will change the suspension geometry on the rear depending on how you raise it. If you want to know how that will change then you need to draw the rear suspension geometry like I did for my R4.

    Personally, I like following well executed projects. I have been watching yours to see how it progresses.

    My little RC162 tribute bike is a long way from stock. More a themed cafe racer/historic tribute racer.

    20220720_135124.jpg Got some little LED indicators and resistor cables from aliexpress but disappointed with the size/weight of resistors. These may suit a car better than bike? I didn't know I could get LED flasher units so cheap until after I'd ordered these. Another 2 months to wait. Got a mini speedo tacho on the way so when that arrives will be able to finish wiring. It hasn't been the most fun job I have to say, the loom seems to be a mix between two wiring diagrams and the colours are not matching up. Hopefully it will run again lol.

    Cut some patches today and started welding them in to cover up the indent where the fairing clip thing was. Tank didn't blow up but there was plenty of smoke coming out. I'll call it purged now as it no longer smells like stale fuel :D 20220803_144853.jpg

    Admin, I would appreciate if you could please delete this thread. Although the build is going forward and should be usable in a few months I will not post updates or contribute anything else on this site after the nasty reprimand from greybeard.

    I would like to remain as a member to access the wealth of knowledge herewithin but if my individual personality is not to your liking then there is nothing I can do if you wish to banish me from this site, as I fully expect after this post.

    We are primarily just a bunch of old farts and becoming a bit intolerant over time.
    I have been enjoying following your progress.
    Don't get disillusioned.
    Hang in there.

    Just be mindful of the posting rules. Keep it clean and keep it friendly.

    We all have pretty thick skins.

    Good luck with your build. I will be interested to see how it finally turns out.
