My better half filled up in Sydney the other day at under $2 per litre.... it is still $2.20 here on the border though... while that doesnt worry me as work pays for mine :)

If it gets and stays under $2 a litre I'll be happier. I was excited to pay $2.08 (in TAS) for Diesel the other day. It's funny how your expectations are adjusted over time; it's been over $2.40 for so long, $2.08 seems like a bargain!

This looks pretty safe right? The stuff we did back in the day just makes you shudder these days.

He is wearing his flame retardant singlet and has his lid on....:)
Is that an old Zephyr?? Probably with a 289 or 302 in it... front tyres are too wide for a serious drag car in the day though...

Doh... I should have looked at the rego

Have Calder Park put up their 2023 Calendar yet @Frankster ?
I could be tempted to go down for the Street Outlaws meeting. Calder is way closer for me than Sydney

Not yet Andy. CPR has a habit of cancelling things at the last minute, so we'll see what happens; "Dates coming soon" isn't a good sign.

Unfortunately, you can scratch Carnell Raceway (Stanthorpe, QLD) from your list of drag racing tracks...

Lola the Corolla; a true 'sleeper' if ever there was one.

Christmas boredom has meant more time in the chair in front the computer reading old stories or watching YT vids. I came across this story which gave me a laugh. Many people talk about 'sleepers' (cars that look lame, but go like stink); Lola is what I would definitely class as that kind of vehicle. I don't follow the 'Drag Challenge' event(s), but I did have a close mate who had one of these things back in the day and it struggled to pull the skin of a rice pudding, so seeing one run in the 9's and look like it should be in a wrecking yard certainly deserves a round of applause (I think).

The Drag-ens Hot Rod Club has announced its 2023 safari which takes in Gunnedah and Dubbo tracks on back-to-back days. Not my scene, but others might be interested.

I helped out at the last one in Gunnedah. Nice low key day out.

Okay. Happy New Year to all.

Looks like the TDRA will continue to race at Gunnedah airstrip for the foreseeable future. Looking forward to seeing some race dates being published. The below annoucement mentions a group I've never heard of. Here's a link to their website...

I've been watching the Dakar 2023 from Saudi Arabia. They've had issues with rain and flooding, but the event is always worth watching and some of the scenery is stunning if not bleak at times. I love the way the bike riders work on their bikes out on the course...spinning the rear wheel until it has sunk enough into the sand to hold the bike upright!

I've put a link to Stage 3 below (a few days ago). They mention the passing of Ken Block at the end of the clip. RIP Ken.

Yes, it's always sad when one of the good guys has an accident or passes away. I had met Sam on a few occasions over the years. He was close with a mate of mine who worked at Graeme Cowin's Rocket Industries. Sam and him formed a friendship and it was easy to see why. Sam has been racing for a long time and doing quite well in feeder classes. I was happy for Sam when he recently became part of the Fabietti Racing Team as being paid to drive and work on a top level car is everyone's dream. The Camaro he was racing was one of the new GM USA skins that has been wind tunnel developed for maximum slipperiness (very low CD number). The problem with cars that run a pro stock style rear spoiler is that they are inherently unstable when they get loose or out of shape at speed. Most of the racers are going away from high downforce rear wings as they are able to get more speed and subsequently better ET's with a slippery, low drag rear setup. The shock absorbers and other suspension geometry is very finicky with these types of rear ends. I'm no expert, but it looks like the out of shape angle that Sam got the car into created a pressure point above the car and it literally pulled itself over from the trailing edge. RIP Sam.

Stage 9 of the Dakar 2023 was worth watching on YT. Aussie bike rider is 3 seconds off the lead.

I was watching this footage of the 1970 NHRA US Nationals the other night on YT. I'd seen the Top Fuel final run many times before as it is a famous piece of footage (for all the wrong reasons), but I had never seen the entire meeting coverage. There are heaps of these older broadcasts making their way online which is Gold for people like me who love watching the older stuff racing. I didn't realise until I had watched the whole thing that this was the first meeting of the Nationals (USA's biggest and most prestigious meeting) where motorcycles raced! If you want to go straight to the bikes (there's only 2 runs in the broadcast) they are at the 5:34 & 26:23 minute marks. And, for all you Triumph fans, there's a special treat for you in the final.
