Well, just to confirm that the 6.65sec HQ is street driven, it has been entered in the 2023 Drag Challenge. The Drag Challenge is a good old-fashioned drive-drag safari taking in multiple drag strips on a back-to-back basis over a number days. Details in this article.

    https://www.whichcar.com.au/streetmachine/events/drag-challenge

And, here's a pic of it driving between events.

    upload_2023-2-4_11-22-7.png

And some YT vid of some of the contestants

And a final warning; if a silver GTS HQ with a licence plate that reads 'Bolics' pulls up next to you at the lights, DO NOT pick a drag race with it.

Spotted at a recent meeting in Sydney. I do believe this is a Royal Enfield running nitrous! Images courtesy of Crackling Pipes photography.

Probably not everyone's cup of tea, but the National Penny Farthing Championship races are on in Evandale, Tasmania this Saturday (18th of Feb 2023). It's an annual event except when there's a pandemic, so it skipped 2021.

    https://evandalevillagefair.com/

    upload_2023-2-16_15-22-18.png

    A Historic Event

First held in 1983, based on an event held in Tunbridge, Tasmania, in the 1970's. Evandale has attracted penny farthing enthusiasts from all states of Australia and from New Zealand, USA, England, Ireland, Holland, Germany, Czech Republic, Sweden, Singapore and Japan. Recognised internationally as the largest annual event in the world devoted to racing antique bicycles.

Penny farthing enthusiasts converge on Evandale from throughout Australia and overseas to vie for a series of races, held on a triangular circuit in the centre of the village. Market stalls and a variety of entertainments are situated in the streets and parks surrounding the race circuit, creating the ambience of a colonial country fair.

Organised by the Evandale Village Fair Inc.

    In The Town of Evandale
The streets of Evandale, Northern Tasmania, Australia. 20 km south of Launceston, 5km south of Launceston Airport. Evandale is one of the state's earlier settlements, with buildings dating back to the 1820's. Many buildings are from Victorian times when penny farthings were the bicycle of the day. The village's well preserved streetscapes provide a perfect backdrop for this event.

    History of the Penny Farthing
The penny farthing evolved from the Velocipede or "Boneshaker" in the 1870's, when it was realised that the larger the front wheel, the further the machine would travel with each turn of the pedal.

The first bicycle to be mass produced, especially in England and America. There was no large scale producer in Australia, bicycles were made here from imported components.

The first bicycles to be raced to any great extent in Australia. In Tasmania regular race meetings were held at the Cricket Grounds in Launceston and Hobart, and the state's first bike club, the Northern Tasmanian Cycling Club, was formed in 1884. Early Austral Wheel Races in Victoria were raced on penny farthings.

Production phased out in the 1890's, when the "safety" bicycles with chain drive made the large front wheel unnecessary.

"Penny Farthing" is acknowledged as a nickname. In their day, they were called "bicycles". British enthusiasts now prefer the term "Ordinary Bicycle", while the Americans prefer "Highwheelers".

That could be a bit of fun.
You wouldn't want to fall off one of those things at any speed.
At that height you could easily break something.

And the hits just keep on coming. Man, I've missed real life; the last couple of years have just been the worst. Mental Note: Don't ever let your freedoms be taken away. On with the motorsports. This event is always an absolute cracker. No bikes, but it's motorsport porn for lovers of heritage racing vehicles.

This is a little different. I think back in the day beach sprints were more common. Good to see people are still racing down the beach. This event is in South Australia next weekend (11th & 12th of March). It would be a bit of fun I'm guessing. Definately not an amateur production.

While not on bikes... these facts just blew me away....

What 10,000 horsepower does to a top fuel tire at launch.
TOP FUEL ACCELERATION PUT INTO PERSPECTIVE
    * One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic-inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower (10,000 HP) than the first 5 rows at the Daytona 500.
    * Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1.2-1.5 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.
    * A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to merely drive the dragster's supercharger.
    * With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.
    * At the stoichiometric 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.
    * Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.
    * Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug.
This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.
    * Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
    * If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.
    * Dragsters reach over 300 MPH before you have completed reading this sentence.
    * In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds, dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4 G's. In order to reach 200 MPH well before half-track, the launch acce leration approaches 8 G's.
    * Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!
    * Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.
    * The redline is actually quite high at 9500 RPM.
    * THE BOTTOM LINE: Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, & for once, NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1,000 per second.
0 to 100 MPH in .8 seconds (the first 60 feet of the run)
0 to 200 MPH in 2.2 seconds (the first 350 feet of the run)
6 g-forces at the starting line (nothing accelerates faster on land)
6 negative g-forces upon deployment of twin ‘chutes at 300 MPH An NHRA Top Fuel Dragster accelerates quicker than any other land vehicle on earth . . quicker than a jet fighter plane . . . quicker than the space shuttle.
The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.420 seconds for the quarter-mile (2004, Doug Kalitta). The top speed record is 337.58 MPH as measured over the last 66' of the run (2005, Tony Schumacher).
    Putting this all into perspective:
You are driving the average $140,000 Lingenfelter twin-turbo powered Corvette Z06. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to launch down a quarter-mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the 'Vette hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line & pass the dragster at an honest 200 MPH. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment.
The dragster launches & starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums & within 3 seconds the dragster catches & passes you.
He beats you to the finish line, a quarter-mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it - from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 MPH & not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race!
    That's acceleration!

    Nice post @Andych

It covers the incredible performance and mechanicals of a Nitro-burning Top Fueller or Funny Car. Sadly (or not), that information is a tad dated. Today's 'cars' are even more scary. The NHRA hasn't run a top fueller or nitro funny car over the 1/4 mile since Scott Kalitta died many years ago. All racing for Nitro TF and FC is now done over a distance of 1,000ft (a 1/4 mile is 1,320ft).

Just to put modern day performance into perspective, the ET and MPH records for 1,000ft are 3.623sec and 338.94mph for Top Fuel. The Funny Car records are 3.793sec and 339.87mph (the speed is a little better due to the better aero on a modern funny car). So, you can imagine that a modern Nitro vehicle travelling at 339mph with another 320ft (1,000ft Vs 1,320ft) of racetrack is going plenty quick and, unfortunately, it is too dangerous. In Australia, we're not quite at the same performance levels of the NHRA, but our guys (and girls) are running 3.7 times at 330mph over the 1,000ft, so still scary crazy stuff.

Thanks for finding that. I ran at King Edward Park and Ringwood in the hillclimbs for a few years (running both open wheelers and sedan cars) and I even had a small drive of the MG TC (No 3)at the begining of the show.
