After posting about my 'bitsa' drag bike and Ruckusman posting about his, I wondered who else has had a go at the lights?
I googled around and found that an English fellow named Mick Hand on the 22nd September 1975 with a blown Honda 250cc twin had run 9.75 @ 142mph defeating Dennis Normans double engined 1656cc Norton 10.71 @ 135.55mph. Now that is impressive!!!!

About halfway down the page a yellow bike number 55.

Don't think I will ever get that sort of time or speed, but I am happy just to give it a go.

    Murdo,

    I ran 14.89 @ 91mph yesterday at Heathcote Park Raceway (HPR) on a stock standard 1989 ZXR250A.

Interesting link you included in your post. The picture of that 250 (bored to 350) must be from 1978 or later because there's a CBX1000Z in the background.

If there are any 2fifty site members who want to go to HPR and have a run, contact me and we'll organise a day.

    Cheers

    Frank

    Well done Frank. :thumb_ups:

The picture of Mick hand is from later, but have found two references to his amazing ride in 1975 in books I have. The last time I have any info on him riding that bike was in Holland in 1995. Not bad for a 60's model Honda to be still raced then.

    Hey Murdo,

I expect one of the books you have is "Drag Bike Racing in Britain: From the Mid 60s to the Mid 80s" by Keith Lee. I sent Keith an email recently asking him if he knew what the 1/4 mile record was for a stock-bore normally-aspirated 4-stroke 250cc bike. He said he wasn't sure, but that Mick Hand was the king of small bore drag bikes...albeit 2-strokes. I'm still hunting for a number (ET) from anybody. I guess it would be in the high 10's or low 11's. I couldn't see a normally-aspirated small capacity 4-stroke bike going any quicker regardless of what you did to it. If I read your Acceleration Archive link correctly, Mick Hand went 9.8 on a blown 350cc 2-stroke...unreal!

    Cheers

    Frank

No Frank, Crazy Horses by Brian Taylor page 103. The other book is Quarter Mile by Steven Myatt, but I cannot remember which page.
Try googleing 'fastest 250 drag bike' or something similar. Amazing what pops up.

Murdo, That's how this whole exercise started!...I have plenty of 250cc bikes and I wanted to go drag racing, so I Googled "fastest 250 drag bike" and here I am.

That second book "Quarter Mile by Steven Myatt" seems like an older publication. If you like bikes and British drag racing history then "Drag Bike Racing in Britain: From the Mid 60s to the Mid 80s" by Keith Lee is a great book. Not too expensive on eBay either.

No Probs. There's also a very good Australian Drag Racing book. I have it at home, but can't remember where it is. Books are becoming a little redundant these days! I will post when I find it.

14.078 @ 153kph is a good run for a 250. That will be our official "2fiftycc" 4-stroke record. Now to try and beat it!

The local club in Kempsey have been trying to get a run on the local aerodrome (and picking my brain for how to), haven't heard from them lately so don't know what is happening with them.
We run at Gunnedah 5 times a year (two day meetings) and have a few from over your way that attend.

Gunnedah sounds like your best bet. 4-5 hour trip from Kempsey. 2-day meet, so stay the night and socialise with the locals and racers.

Hey Murdo, when's your next Gunnedah meeting?

March 15 & 16. I wont be there this time but can post up when the next are on if anybody interested. We have racers come from Sydney and Brisbane to attend as we run a friendly non pressure meeting. $90.00 for the weekend, you can get as many runs as you want on Saturday practice. Sunday morning two or three qualifiers before timed eliminations. Accommodation from motels, pubs, camping, etc.
Aky, you have to ride up the ranges to Walcha (Oxley Highway) on the way, be worth it for that plus the racing.

    Aky,

Stick it on a trailer, grab a mate, a tent and make a weekend of it. You'll have a ball. Petrol + $90 for 2 days...beautiful!
