Ok.. So have been thinking about this a lot recently in regards to my bike.... Now I understand that these a 20+ year old bikes.. And you will never recover any of the money you put into the bike(unless your name is Chris aka kiffsta).... So my question is..... Is there a time to say "Ok, I can not justify any more money on this" and move on.. or do you keep at it and keep putting more time and money into it.. even if you could have moved on and brought some with less hassles?

I do understand that it comes down to how passionate you are about bikes.... This is more just a "whats your opinion" thing..

I don't really have one, other then if it's a bike you really want who cares if you lose out when you pass it on as the enjoyment of riding something YOU have saved from being parted is worth a lot more then cash!

My advice is gut I payed nearly 2500 for my fizzer got it mechanically a1 and cost well over a grand and now trying to sell it for 2300 I love the fizzer doesn't miss a beat and wish I could keep it but want to go racing instead but I don't regret the money spent as I have had it apart learnt a lot and enjoyed it my mates would of spent more at the clubs then I have on the fzr in last year and now I can pass on to someone knowing it will keep going so if u don't intend on keeping u have to way it up mate

And when you see bikes in a lot better condition I.E yours selling for 2,3 I have been to question weather to keep spend the money on this or peronalise a bike thats is road ready...

Ha Ha, me make money from them, that's sort of true in so far as I always took a risk on buying non runners, I always bought 2,3,4 sometimes 5 of them and would often make 1 from 2, or 2 from 3 etc , I then take the best parts to make a full one, then the 2nd best bits to make a second one, the rest is sold. Parting them is the only way I can make some cash back and continue to do what I love, but in saying that I think I save more than I strip.

My advice to you is don't get disheartened as its a journey , I'm by no means a mechanic and I have no issues in paying a mechanic to do stuff beyond my ability, this was a lesson learnt later in life, and I had a few ZXR's that were low on compression, I just assumed engines were worn out, rather than checking valve clearances etc I just stripped them.

I have a compression tool you can borrow if you want to check your cylinders, if they are low, then it could be a head gasket, could be valves, valve stem seals etc who knows, but once its done and done correctly, you know that it will be sweet.

I'm going through a phase at the moment that its no longer fun to do what I was doing, I found even going to the post office to send some parts a stress, hence why I'm thinning the heard and trying to buy something modern just to ride. I'm sure I will get back into it, but I need a break.

If your enthusiasm is waning, then maybe its time to put a sheet over it and get your R6 back on the road, then come back to it in a few months with fresh enthusiasm.

Depends on how long you intend to keep it. The longer the ownership, the more valuable an more return on your "investment".

While circumstances change (Macca and Kiffsta) if you intend to keep the bike for a long period, it is worth it. If not, it's not.

While I agree that buying one that is immaculate (Maccas) I don't think it's worth it. I have my fizzer, and if I had money to burn id buy and road his, track mine. However, a month or 6 later I may just have the same issues I do now. 6 one way, a half dozen the other. At least when you keep at it, you'll have a ripper problem free bike in the end. Utter frustration until then.....

But that's a little off topic.

The REASON I went another FZR after I bought my old one (read my build thread, first post) http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/my-1990-tech-21-fizzer.1544/ is the fact that I would cost more to rebuild my old one. Not just in money but:

Time. We easily dispose of it. How much is it worth to you?

@Revolver and @kiffsta spot on we all can give u r opinion but they all vary and my situation is different to chris as to you but at the end don't let frustration make they choice take a couple of days or weeks and come back and think do I wanna project or do I wanna just ride me personally I like both this is y I think I will like racing have time in between to tinker and get my kicks on track every now then rather than on the road (have had a few nasty accidents) and over other ppl on them

Cheers chris. I may test both engines. And see if the other engine is worth keeping.

Just sick of hitting brick walls every time I touch the bike. Never had this many issues with my cibby nor with my R6. I leave it alone for weeks at a time spend money and put new parts on it and still nothing. And because I have nothing to ride at the moment got nothing to relax me when the frustration gets to me.

Sounds like your at a crossroads in life. As said, take some time to do something else for a while and come back and have a think about what you wish to do.
I have sold bikes (and cars) that have just been frustration and heart ache, and so far have not regrated it. Then bought good ones that are in top condition and only need servicing and riding, but had nothing to tinker with, so back to buying 'dungers' to fix up and play with. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

After working on mine on the weekend I was starting to wonder if I should cut my losses and move on. It was also made worse by finding something better for not too much money.

Then I added up what this bike owes me and remembered its fark all in the grand scheme of things, and it would be nice to finish what I started.

I don't think I could ever get rid of mine.

Started off as an $800 bike and now owes me well over 2 grand and I still have to possibly get a new gearbox, clutch, cam chain, And fairings just to bring it back up to scratch.

I think a normal person would scrap it (that's what the previous owner was going to do)

I don't regret it one bit, I think I'm a little emotionally attached.
