BEWARE NSW REGO RULES ON REPAIRABLE WRITE OFFS. big sign at the pit inspection site in newcastle. after january 31-2013 repairable write offs will be treated the same as statutary write offs.if you now buy a damaged bike it looks like parts only. Before you buy get a vin number and do a PPSR report for 9.90$.it may save you a lot of grief.

I heard there were changes to the write off rules. It sounds like it will be a pain to do project bikes. but the report would be money well spent.

Sounds like a classic case of government putting there noses where they aren't required, whats new.

    Reviving an old thread.

I want to rant about repairable write off system. It doesn't leave after an inspection, it just means you can reregister the vehicle in that state. If you're lucky, it'll be allowed in other states, but then there are things like it had a lesser inspection in remote NSW so it isn't up to standard in qld. My VTR is an inspected repairable write off, it is registered, and I have to tell people it is on the register as inspected. Someone claimed that an insurance company wouldn't cover a vehicle because it was repairable-inspected. Which begs the question: what's the point? Maybe they should be like NSW and all stat w/o or not on the wovr. Who's going to buy my bike with that against its name? Someone was looking for a lams bike I suggested the VTR250, a mate of his was "yeah, they're great, get that" and I mentioned it was repairable-inspected, then his mate was "not this one!" Sigh.

if a repairable write off has passed the registration test then it can be insured. in nsw all write offs are that and it was to prevent rebirthing by middle eastern crims.i have seen vehicles written off for a damaged bumper.older cars are not worth claiming insurance on as if they are older than 15 years they get the chop.

Rebirthing hasn’t gone away, all they are doing now is exporting them overseas as the write off status doesn’t follow

That is why the auction prices are so crazy , they buy , them dodgy fix and they end up in Singapore , Thailand and New Zealand as “good bikes”

Amazing what you learn in the industry

And then we have perfectly straight bikes that could well have been stolen and retrieved but still classed as a Statutory Write Off... the VIN is cancelled and an the frame stamped with the write off code or whatever it is... it is such a shame that there are perfectly good frames that are nothing more than scrap because of this system....
