ok I'm maybe doing it again ,going to look at a 1996 gpx250 that's going very /very cheap .says has to start full throttle with choke on but when starts, backs throttle off dies ,new oil /air filters /plugs , 57000 kls I'm guessing /maybe take a punt mainly carb clean (hasn't been ridden for a long time ) whats your thoughts ,not familiar with these bikes ,any thing to look out for especially (current owner definitly not mechanicaly minded) only seen photos but its all complete and in very reasonable order otherwise (will want to do a compression test before buying so anybody got the figures on what it should read)... thanks

hoping that it will be the carbs and the dreaded ethanol residue problem but definitely will have to do a compression test so thanks for those figures ,will with fuel /picking it up will cost about 300 could well be worth the punt

The jets, air jets and air passageways will be blocked. Compressed air, threebond/carby cleaner and fresh, non ethanol fuel and you're good to go. Litetek kit in case you want to use ethanol fuel.

Threebond green tin is the best stuff for cleaning carbs, spray some in a jar and let it settle , then drop in your jets and emulsion tubes, give it na hour or 2, clean with compressed air and you have a winner !!!

thanks will give it a go ,definitely will come in handy as ethanol residue is a real problem up here with any small motors (rideons generators etc ) especially for some strange reason a lot of the new models don't have fuel taps to turn off and run them out of fuel for storage (ist thing always put on)

Also do the valve clearances before you do the comp test.
I bet it is dirty carbs.
