Well... time to start some digging. Immediate area of attention will go to the cam chain (see video), then let's see what else I find as the fairings come off...

Needs a cam chain and maybe one the guides is shot (or its rubbing against the cam cover). Do an oil & filter change if you haven't already and see if the noise reduces.

Well, here are some much needed photos :D

Tell me why people but crappy black paint on beauty again? Personal taste maybe but damn... I love the hidden colour...

This is where I'm going to disappoint? everyone.... I have been over this bike extensively and I have come up with a few minor ailments meaning this isn't going to be much of a project at all. The bike is in much better condition than I expected, it has obviously been worked on before. Smooth through the rev range so I won't touch the carbies (yet... touch wood with fizzers), starts first time... what more could you ask for from a 3EN1 (1990)?

So I had a good look at the rattle and to my great relief it's just the EXUP valve. I'm pretty confident, the old screw driver on the ear lobe trick and it's coming from the exhaust. Might pop it open and see what's going on in there. Couple of other issues include a broken choke lever, a small electrical short that looks ancient (that could get a little interesting), engine cover needs repair and the cooling pipe in the photo above (left hand side) needs replacing. I'll continue to expose the old paint (that's cosmetic anyway). Apart from an oil & filter change I reckon she's ready for a roadie and to be put on club rego. This might end up being a very short thread afterall!

Looks like someone's reused the base and head gaskets and just coated them in silicon shite

the $64,000 question is how much you paid for it - inquiring minds want to know!

You can buy a new alternator cover from China. I got one for mine and they cost peanuts.

Good score there, i'm very jealous!

Do you have a compressor ?
I used to have my own crash shop and have worked in a few too, loose paint like that can be blown off pretty easy using a compressor and blow gun at about 100+ psi
You could also try a pressure cleaner, although if there's any chip through the original paint some of that may come off
Work your way across it with air/water pressure on the original paint toward's the black, you'll soon have flake's everywhere.
I stripped a full clear coat off a 1960 Mercedes Benz 300SL Roadster coupe year's ago with just a compressor and blow gun.

I'm a bit more stoked than I expected to be honest. There are other things that have happened I haven't shared yet such as the guy handing me a crate of spare parts with it, telling me it was up jetted and dyno tuned and he used to spend his time shaming litre bikes... as well as wanting to race it but it had a gasket oil leak somewhere that they frown upon apparently (I haven't found it yet, but I can't see anything major happening underneath)... With all that said I'll put his words to the test but I wasn't expecting any of that.

I'm carefully rubbing the paint off with acetone, I know it's a dangerous game but it's not flaking off and turps wasn't doing it. So far I have had a lot of success, I'll need to respray the nose cone but the others are coming up pretty well. I'll save the photos to the final reveal :D

Been getting a bit carried away with the beautiful gold colour so haven't even done much maintenance yet, besides pull the alternator cover off and poke around a bit.

I have plenty of JB weld which will fix it right up, also grey high heat paint. So no problem there.

Great score there Joker, is there many Fzr 400 parts around Oz? Always wanted a Zxr 400 but dont want to drain the bank account getting parts from the UK for it. How many HP do the 400s have and were they all limited like the 250s were??

I don't know yet to be honest, so that could be a bit interesting. Apparently a 600 engine will bolt in so there may be options if I have major problems. I am also not sure about restrictions but this engine feels solid so will be interesting to see what she's got. I think it will pass a RW so I can club rego however want to make sure any maintenance issues are under control first before I go riding. Last thing I need is another broken fizzer in the newly opened southern branch of the fizzer factory (pending the boss' approval) lol

The restriction/s on the FZR250 was brought in sometime in 1991, so anything newer (1991 - 1994) is restricted to 40hp, earlier exup model's were 45hp @ 16,000 rpm
    The '86 FZR400 make's 58hp @ 12,000 rev's, the '89 on FZR400 make's 60hp - 64hp @ 12,500 rpm depending on where you read
    FZR400RR came out in 1990.
