Firstly, check your fuses, then spark. Don't forget that senders and switches can be faulty. As for the thermostat, looks like it retracted and then fell out of alignment with the top locator. Thermostats are for cold counties, not needed so much in Australia. But it is always worth chucking a new thermo in a saucepan of water to make sure it does work. All the best.

Haha... maybe they are not needed in Qld but they do make a difference down here... engines don't warm up to optimal operating temp if there is no thermostat and that tends to wear them out rather quickly... :)
I suspect the fan switch is my issue now... at least in the fan not coming on... lack of running is more fuel related I think... the fuel filter on the petcock wasnt the best and I am now concerned it might have come apart and blocked up the fuel system... Oh well... something to do next weekend now :)

Thermostats are needed to keep the engine cool, as the water/coolant circulating too fast does not allow it to lose heat through the radiator.

The classic example of this was one year at harvest time in the late 1960's the harvester was running very hot (it was a Massey Ferguson 585 with a Chrysler 6 cylinder side valve engine (Dodge Kew type)) and my dad thought the thermostat had stuck so he took it out. The engine ran so hot in boiled before he noticed it. Calls to mechanics all suggested the rad blocked, but even professional cleaning made no difference. Finally my uncle suggested the water was flowing too quickly and he put a 1/2" washer where the thermostat sat and problem solved. That washer was still there and working well when we sold it years later. Too much flow can also be a problem.

Cast iron blocks for you :p
But as you said, a restricter works, too.
@Andych I thought it was hot in Sydney, too? And if you ask @Jo Verhelst you'll find your winters aren't that cold. But, yes, a thermostat keeps a more consistent temp for better operation.

Hmmm seems I might have an issue with the Voltage Reg on the Across... went to fire it up today and nothing at all on on the battery... dead as a doornail.. so out came the booster pack... vroom.. starts up immediately but I notice the neutral light is fluctuating / blinking... almost as if it isnt getting enough juice... I will break out the multi meter in the next day or so (it is in the back of the car seeing as work owns it) and look at what the charging rate is when its running...
It is back on charge now...

We had half our average february rainfall in 2 days over the weekend. Today it's 41, and hot for the rest of the week, so i think you may have more hot weather coming @Murdo

When will it end? I'm about ready to split for somewhere south that never gets above 25C.

I thought I had it under control.

3 bolts, 2 bolts, whatever. I had all the bleeders found. I had fresh gaskets everywhere.

I filled it with coolant and the bastard started leaking out the weep hole behind the waterpump! How in the hell?!????!

So much for riding it to the 1 Moto Show this weekend. I been looking forward to that for weeks. Guess I get to figure out how to rebuild the water pump now- it sure didn't leak before this!

Grumble ... I've had this thing for 6 months and put less than 25 km on it. I will not be defeated. I had to walk away for tonight tho. Garage was somewhere around 1c, we got 8 inches (so what, 20cm?) of snow a couple days back, I was freezing and angry. Guess that adds ANOTHER month to the schedule while I wait for parts...

A word of advice on rebuilding waterpumps... unless you know what you're doing, it will leak... Either get a 2nd hand one, a brand new complete unit, or buy the parts and pay a professional to rebuild it.

I dunno what could have failed or how much complexity there is. I pulled the impeller off, and the sprung seal behind it... what else is there? Shouldn't I just be able to replace that keyed seal?

The seals are usually pressed in but also sealed with an expoxy of some sort. Scratch any surface where the seal is pressed in or damage the epoxy, force the seal etc, it will leak.
