Ok so she's running... runs well. Haven't done an update in a while. Biggest issue at the moment is this:

    17240458_10158334171465716_483124839330273121_o.jpg

The sump has a new gasket AND i torqued up the bolts correctly but she's still seeping... pretty badly. What do you guys use to seal sumps where NEW gaskets don't work? I might have to go for a thin layer of goop...

More to follow... lotsa things to juggle atm!

Is the flat surface of the sump warped?
Might have been over tightened at some stage.
You might be able to have it lightly faced?

Or you could try making a thicker gasket?

Otherwise some of this might help?

I don't know if it's warped however judging by what is happening it is not flat. The sump was originally sealed with a layer of liquid gasket but the new gasket is quite thick so I can't see why it leaks.

Pain in the bum, as this holds everything up lol

Was it an OE or aftermarket gasket ? Properly cleaned ? Both dowels fitted ?
I use a piece of thickish MDF with a sheet of 80 grit sandpaper glued to it to flat down any dubious gasket surfaces.
You want it big enough so you can move the sump in an orbital style pattern.

If you do have to use an RTV I prefer the Permatex high duty stuff.

Aftermarket, yes cleaned, dowels were in. The gasket was 0.4mm thick so I traced it onto my 0.8mm oil jointing gasket roll and cut a new one. It's on now and no more leaks (from the oil anyway). Put coolant in and guess what - a puddle of coolant tells me I need new o rings for the water pipe now. Always the little things!

Well it's been a long while since I've done an update. Ended up moving house... new horizons and such. The 400 is getting some attention again, biggest issue at the moment is some damage on the oil filter cover that I am fixing. No more coolant leaks, have a minor one from a sump bolt hole but I think a bit of silicone should fix that up. Bike needs a good throat clearing so I'm now sanding and patching the fairings in preparation for a long awaited test ride.

Ok so one thing I realised is that when I got this bike there was a black silicone around the outside of a lot of the engine joins. I now know why, I have little bits dribbling from several places (except the work I did with the cylinder head, I had that machined flat). Looks like I might have to do the same thing otherwise it's full disassembly and I can't be bothered going through that again. Any suggestions on what sort of silicone I could use? I have some high heat silicone gasket cement but it might not be the right stuff... or it might be.

You could use the black urethane if you have any.
    Just degrease it well first

Hmm. Any recommendation on brands etc? I assume it will need to be high heat resistance, I don't think the standard sikaflex will cut it.

Just checked the pdf spec's on the 227 urethane it's only temporarily oil resistant

    What about some Devcon ?

I use (when I have too) the grey silicone MAX which is I think a Loctite product. Don't remember the specs but it will stay in exhaust long enough for carbon to build up and seal the joint.

Nice thanks guys I'll have a look around. The high temp gasket goo I have might do the job as well, I have plenty of brake cleaner to prep the surfaces... biggest issue now is some dents in the oil filter cover. Trying to source a replacement from the UK (unless @kiffsta magically has one for a 1WG engine) ;)

Yeh. There's a guy in the UK wrecking an engine so for 10 pounds am hoping to get a replacement. It is leaking significantly less than it was but it's still enough for it to fail a RW.

I went with the high temp stuff I wrote there, got a small tube for like $15ish and put it around the front of the sump. Put on the replacement oil filter cover and no leaks so far - fingers crossed! :)

Ok so finishing touches yesterday, ran her at idle for a while to pressure test/heat test all the seals & joins and she started crying lol

    Always something, damn fizzers!

At least NO OIL LEAKS YAY. These ones are straightforward to fix so will get right onto them soon. The bottom one will get an o ring, The radiator one I'll try some JB weld high heat epoxy putty, if not a friend has offered me his 400 radiator so there are options.
