I help a guy about a year ago get his MC22 running after he pulled it apart, the last time I was at his house, he showed me a FZR400 track bike that he had been gifted from a relative. I did ask to him to let me know if he ever planned on offering it for sale. Fast forward to a few weeks ago and he contacted me saying he was selling all his bikes bar one as he and his misses were going to buying a house. We eventually agreed on a price and I collected it last night.

    This is how it arrived

The panels are OEM Yamaha, except for the seat and cowl which is fibreglass. There is a carbon exhaust which has a JMCA badge on it which tells me it was fitted in Japan , and certified for road use

    IMG_1676.JPG
JMCA (Japan Motorcycle Accessories Association) are a testing body who approve the exhaust has met all regulations to be fit for road use, mainly noise (db)

I decided to check the oil level in the sight glass but it blacked out, so I dropped the oil and found nearly 3l in there, the manual says 2.3l.

The colour was pretty ordinary, but it was still runny and had a tinge of brown, it would do for a test start.

I opened the tank and there is fuel in there, it didn't smell to bad so I thought I would crank it over and see if she fired. after 10 secs of cranking, she coughed and sputtered and started on 3 cylinders and spat a heap of fuel out of the over flow.

Time to pull the carbs down and give her the three bond treatment.

The upside down forks are not stock so I need to find out what they are off

Nice score there... is this going to become your track bike now?

Possibly, I have pulled the bottom of the carbs off and they are not to bad ( well, I have seen worse), although all the jets are blocked apart from the mains, next step is get the emulsion tubes out and make sure they are clean

Hmm, all 4 diaphragms have tiny holes in them in the same place, is this by design ?

Nope, diaphram should not have any holes in it for a 3EN2 - which is the model you have there, same as mine!

    ok so!

    a) What Jet Sizes does it have fitted?
    b) MikuniOz.com do all the jets you need, reasonably cheap and probably worth replacing 99% of them so you dont ever have to worry about that
    c) Get Blair's rebuild kit - just... do yourself a favour
    d) Those forks are an FZR1000 set by the look of them - they use the same headstem as the 400/600 models so they literally bolt in and retain the speedo drive
    e) If racebike is the go - replace the pannels with at least Chinesium copies, aprox $600 painted minus the tank cover - good value and they come in 3EN2 styles, race front fairing as well so you can delete the headlight, cheap and basic but they do they job
    f) If you need any advise/spares/etc I have an abundance of experience with this bike, including doing an EXUP delete/Speedo bypass/dash change/re-jet for a 4-1 Stainless System/FZR600 swap

Looks like a fun toy though!

    Keep us posted!

Just looked through the photo's some more as well

Check what size rear wheel/tyre you have fitted as that swingarm doesn't look like a 3EN2 Deltabox one - looks closer in style to the 3EN1 model.
Both had the 140/60/R18 tyre fitted on a 4" wide rim
If it has a 17" fitted on a different swingarm setup you're absolutely golden as the Forks/Swingarm are the two biggest limiting factors for suspension/tyres on that bike and should be a huge upgrade

Oh and for the carbs - while pricey (read $$$) FactoryPro in the US do a whole heap of parts for the FZR 400 carbs and they are really good quality and help a lot in putting very shiney parts in those otherwise nearly impossible to replace parts like the emulsion tubes

Also that subframe is a custom job by the look of it as the original one is much bulkier and made of square steel tubing, very nice piece of kit on yours!

I also have non stock jets in mine so can advise depending on what you have.

Fizzer fun happens when they run!

I took mine for a squirt today and reminded myself what a race-pipe+jet kit feels like, above 9K this thing really starts to move! Bwahaha

Who needs a 600 swap when you have that symphony screaming to 14k, such an enjoyable bike to ride when im not stressed about it breaking haha

That look's like an R6 swingarm doesn't it?
Might be R6 fork's too if that's the case

Might be an R6 swinger then - I'd be veeeery interested in any detail pictures you can share if it is - see how it was mounted.

I'm almost 100% sure they are FZR1000 forks - unless they are early model R1 forks but I doubt that due to the brakes bring older model ones not the Blue Dot mono-block calipers that came later (which incidentally are usually a huge upgrade and bolt right on)

Looks like standard 3EN1 swingarm to me.

well, its most definitely alive, I finished reassembling the carbs, I made a massive rookie error, I was blowing it all out with compressed air and realised I left the tiny o rings on top of the carb housing, they are nowhere to be seen.

Lucky I found some spare litetek ones in my spares box marked O-ring 25, I also replaced the air fuel mix screw seals with spares I had from LiteTek

    IMG_1719.JPG IMG_1721.JPG

Oil and filter was changed, she fired right up. Loads of white smoke then it settled down and holds a nice idle.

Here is a video of her running

Better pic of the swing arm

will replace the plugs today and check over the cooling system

plugs still haven't arrived, but I was selling the virtues of threebond to a customer and he was asking how it is used , so I said I would put a can through the fizzer , used about half a can and sprayed it into each carb, she blew lots of smoke, then cleared up, the engine note has significantly changed now

On a side note, the radiator has a pin ***** hole.. ggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Yes, installing the air box does do something to the engine note :lolsign:

Sounds good though, a familiar roar at least. I had the same problem with my crying radiator but I stole @MashtX 's spare. He would know what after market one you can source if you wanted, or maybe JB weld might do it for you (they have an aquaweld range). I'm looking at repairing mine with that when I get to it.... maybe.... ok... someday is more accurate...:offtopic:
