Now I know this is dumb posting it without pics..

Anyways - neighbour has an Across. Not sure on year, it's that teal colour.
Anyways, he said it needs new front fork seals and a carby kit.. what is a carby kit? Estimates on cost?

No roadworthy or rego, he's asking $300.

    Thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Troy.

Carb kit usually means all the rubber seals/gaskets in the carbs. On occasion there are rebuild kits that include new brass bits (jets, needles etc), float needles and other little bits.

Fork seals can be difficult without the proper tools, best to outsource the job, a bike shop can do it in 2 hours or less.

Have a look at the general condition of the bike, look for corrosion, rust, general neglect and hack jobs. You don't want to buy someone else's pipedream aka basket case.

    Hey Troy

The across is a great bike with a sweet inline 4 cylinder engine , not as sporty as the zxr’s , fzr’s and cbr’s. But still a cool bike. Fork seals are about $200 fitted from your local bike mechanic ,’I’d hazard a guess that your neighbour is suggesting a carb kit Because it has sat and no longer runs. Litetek sell a seal kit , however you might get away with a carb clean. This can be dependant of the kms that the bike has done.

Weak points on these bikes are the ignition barrels , the speedo cable is known to fall off while riding and the slide holders in the carb fall off due to wear

$300 is a good price for a bike , be prepared to spend a few bucks on oil , filters etc possibly tyres if it has sat that long . I am in capalaba if you need any help

If you are handy with spanners , fork seals can be bought for $30-$40 , fork oil $15, engine oil and filter $50 and some carb cleaner is $15

A RWC will be around the $60 mark plus rego, @$300 you could have it on the road for under $1000

How many KM's does it have ?

    Chris

    Thanks for the replies,

He said it's got a new rear tyre.
As for fitting the seals etc - my brother is in Gatton (in Dalby) and his good friends with a guy who works at the bike and mower shop as a mechanic - apparently he'll be happy to help with anything, so labour may be a carton..

Not as sporty is fine, it's my attempt at a first bike (again..). Tried a few years back with a near new Ninja 650. Dropped it and got disheartened.. was an expensive bike at the time. This one being so cheap I have none of those worries so am trying bikes again. Gunna go for the restricted licence this time around.

Will see if I can go get some pics.

    Welcome
I am with @kiffsta on the Across... apparently the engines are pretty tough. They are a reasonably heavy bike at 168kg and not as nimble as some of the other popular 250's (Honda VTR for instance) for the $ it sounds like it could be a good purchase.
    Pics are always good.

Got a quote on fork seals - $170 fitted.
For the carby his response was "how long is a piece of string" and needs to see it to know.

Welcome mate. Try this for fork seals, I've done it a few times using his method and it works well. You can make your own seal driver out of a couple of bits of PVC from bunnings you just need some rubber grease and the seals themselves.

Probably better to outsource the fork seals. I had mine done for $220 (never gone back to that shop since tho, overcharged me and they were lazy and I ended up being late to work because of them), I wouldn’t pay more than $200 for fork seal replacement so you got a sweet deal with $170.
I picked up my new Across after I had an accident on my other Across for $450, wasn’t running, found out it just needed a new flywheel but then discovered a bunch of other problems like seized pistons and a leaking fuel tank. Just make sure you look over every inch of the bike. Even if it’s a sweet/cheap deal, you don’t wanna be stuck with a bike in pieces in your garage/carport like me because it had way more problems than you anticipated, trust me, not worth it lol. 51b43b97b2a903993539638e30fb4e25.jpg
Don’t feel stupid for triple checking the little things, if something serious is busted, you might end up forking our more money fixing the problems than the bike is work (I’ve spent another $600 on my bike bringing the total up to $1050 and still have more to spend before she’s running lol) post some pics when you can too :)

Across is a sweet ride if it's running right. I've had a bout 5 Across's so far lol..

Fork seals are $13 a pair & take around 2hr if you haven't done it before. Do it yourself that way you gain some invaluable knowledge & you'll know how to do most forks if you need to do it again.

I see a lot of people say when selling bikes that "it need's a carby kit". What they actually mean is they don't know why it's running like crap & I haven't even checked the carbs to see if it needs a kit. Most likely it will need some float valves as they tend to seize up & just not seal/work properly. They can be had for around $4 per valve. Then just check the service manual for carb settings & your good to go.
