A little more welding and grinding today... a little shaping left to do tomorrow after I went inside to watch the V8's at Phillip Island. Back out to the garage after dinner to make a start on my front forks... Undid the bolt on the first one, drained most of the oil out.. it wasnt too bad actually. a little murky but not as bad as I thought it would be. Tried to use the stanchion to try and remove the seal (yep circlip is out) but it didnt want to budge. Rather than make lots of noise I packed up and will hit it again in the morning. I will need to look for my paint stripper then as well so I can strip them down ready for paint.
Hmmm should they be charcoal or metallic silver??

I was waiting for that... Nope... not going to compete with the Hammertone Flyer :)
I will go silver rather than polished alloy.. This is the basic colour scheme... just a different Candy Red. 3WP.jpg

So... I spent the better part of today getting the damned seals out of the FZR front forks... I swear, if I ever find the numbnut that loctite on the fork seals... GRRRRRRRR
I ended up having to burn both of them out with my propane torch. They simply would not budge and even with the propane torchit was a case of burn some and peel it out to the point when I could use a screw driver to bend in the side of the old seal enough to prise it out... and I still have to fix the mangling they had done before and didnt clean up before they put them back together.. anyway.. they are all apart now, cleaned up and will be scuffed up and painted over the next evening or 2.
I also need to measure the outside diameter of the seal so I can get some pipe to use as a seal driver.
Couldnt take pics as I was covered in fork oil... even relatively good stuff stinks...

I captured the Balius on song with a GoPro.

Then I noticed a petrol blister on my refurbed tank.....

Can’t have it all I guess.

    Off to do more fettling.

I thought I would be clever today and bought a can of Rustoleum Metallic Silver "Textured" paint not thinking it would actually be "Textured". Came home, light scuff of the fork lowers and a good clean down with some thinners.. a light prime coat or 2 and then a little later I hit it with a coat of the Rustoleum... Well bug#er me dead... it is "Textured" and quite a bit as well...
So.. it is going to come off and I will go and get some Duplicolor Aluminium Engine paint... It has the finish I am looking for.
    Lesson learned...

Funny all that fork seal stuff. I have always dropped the bottom legs off to change fork seals.

The 3LN fork's area bit harder as they don't have a hex in the bottom to hold the fork in, it's a taper there so make's it harder to undo the bolt's from underneath

Do you mean it is difficult to stop the damper rod from rotating while you try to undo the bolt? I've always used a rattle gun.

Yeah, i had to really push the fork leg down while undoing the bottom bolt with the rattle gun

That was the easy part for me... held them sideways in the vice (by the stanchion... they are bent beyond fixing) and with the top nut cracked but then nipped up again I used an allen key with a ring spanner on the end to give it some leverage and they both cracked easily. You had to keep the top nut and all internals in so you could fully undo the allen bolt though.
The hard part for me was getting the actual seals out as they were glued in with loctite... I tried heat around the outside... I used the bottom leg as a slide hammer... I tried every way that google suggested and then had to burn the rubber away so I could use a screw driver to punch down beside the metal outer ring of the seal so I could prise them up.
A length of 40mm pressure pipe is the perfect size for the seal driver... once I get the painting corrected :headbang:

Feel for you Andy, I'm trying to get the countershaft sprocket nut off my Honda. Seems like another Loctited job. Making a special tool now. I wish all these butchers would just stay home and watch tv.

So I had an engine with terrible blow-by, to the point spray oil out of the breather and choking the air filter (made a catch can for it). After months of putting it off, I finally pulled the engine out and down. As I removed the piston, pieces of the rings rained down: they had shattered. The engine was full of carbon buildup, in places it was like scraping the oil and dirt buildup you get on the outside of an engine. There were some bad ring shutter grooves at the top of the bore and even at the bottom of the stroke. Choices were rebore and get oversized piston kits or dodgy hone it heaps, new rings and hope for the best. The bank account decided new pistons and rebore weren't in the budget. After lots of honing, there were still grooves, but it was better. I got the head skimmed, figured it was worth doing, only wished I had left the head complete, their parts dishwasher cleaned it quite nicely, which inspired me to clean the rest, too. I scrubbed the inside and outside, sprayed a little paint on the bottom end, and washed the alloy parts in petrol then degreaser-hosedown. You can tell which parts went on later, the cleaning was less thorough later in the build. But finally, after a month of working on it, yesterday I finally got my ute running again! Oh wait, this is the "what have I done to my bike" thread.... Well this is the reason I got not much bike done in a month! I haven't even got to the gearbox drama or the noisy bearing, maybe I'll do a "non-250 project" entry.

Actually, bike related, I got the never-should-have-bought-it, should-have-left-it-at-the-wreckers Marauder going in Saturday! Thanks to @Murdo for the head. But it isn't worth any more of my time or money, so I'm selling as is, including a whining noise in the engine, possibly main bearings. New owner problem!

Next: MY zxr250 or Across. After I sort this daihatsu..

Well that would be weird, the drive is on the left side of the bike so makes a tightening motion to the nut as it rotates.
