Well that was a long read. Nice resto/repair. What have I learned ? fzrs are pretty interesting with their own unique little design quirks but their carbs absolutely suck haha
You sir are a master of understatement Carbs absolutely suck doesn't even come close, great bikes otherwise
Todays big effort .... Small carb T piece filter picked up some junk Bit of bowl leakage Some Tygon goodness Before ....
You have to watch the bolt length for the fuel tap, too long and it can damage the barb for the fuel line
Yea I had to change the bolts as that one is brand new .... a 3LN1 tap is different .... the movable outlet is on the 'bottom' and goes to the filter
Once again, I can't emphasize how important & informative spark plug READING is, it will tell you exactly how the engine has been running recently, & if you have a problem with a non starting or badly running engine the spark plugs will always tell you the reason why.
It's an FZR250, the reason is the carbs. Keen to see the carbs come apart again... will there be some keyster goodness going in @GreyImport ?
Theres pics of them a few posts back .... let me know they are on the bench already .... I put keyster crap in ages ago ... made no difference Im going to chuck the keyster needles and put in original (least worn) ones with the keyster needle jets Do the slide mod Sort out the pilot merge chambers They were originally done with a lot less knowledge and proper settings and specs available all those years ago so Ill be setting them up (correct jets etc) to the very specific specs for 3LN1 carbs (different than the later models) that are now available ... and maybe sorting out the coils, leads and caps + the fuel filter also might make it run 100% instead of 80% well maybe
Giving the old clunker a bit of loving as rego is due for cancellation in about 3 weeks ... sadly theres still the carbys to rebuild also Looks like the clip had fallen off #3 ... hopefully thats the cause of the lag in the lower rev range ... that Keyster stuff is junk ... low end quality Whoever designed the pilot merge chamber bung needs a poke in the eye with a cherry blossom branch Battery recharge , new plug caps , new front brake fluid , chain clean , new crankcase breather .... yada yada
Theres 4 very small holes in the pilot merge chamber thru to the carby throat ... I used a guitar string to make sure they were clear .. the throttle/butterfly needs to be opened as its directly behind
Did you check the mixture screw hole's at the bottom of the thread's for any dried up gum /varnish too ?
An M6 screw or better still an old screwdriver that you can file the flat onto is better for removing those bungs. They are too fragile to grip from the exterior. Poke that into it and you should be able to wiggle it out.
Yea checked that ... Ive been spraying carb cleaner thru the orifices to check they are clean and clear and will blast the air thru just before rebuilding ... carbs are still pretty spotless from the original overhaul ... except the merge chamber area as it was an unknown beast until recently special tool #bungremover just manufactured ... Ill give it a run on the second 2 carbs
Pro tip ... get in close and personal with the merge chamber ... lots of leftover oring and grunge stuck in there I see the light !
