Anyone tried penrite 15w50 premium mineral oil? Went to their website and it recommends that for a 1989 Yamaha Fzr250. Says its the same as 10w30. Didnt know what oil came with it

penrite has zinc in it and helps bearing life. some use caltex diesel oil for same reason. should be ok.

Caltex Delo 400 15w40 is very good, you can get it from Caltex servos in 5L and 1L bottles. Just make sure it's not delo gold, silver, or anything else.

The 30 in 10W30 is the high temp value of the rating. It means that at the high temp this oil will have the same viscosity as a 30 weight single grade. If the engine manufacturer specifies a 10W30 then you want to have a damn good reason to move away from that especially with an engine that spins as high as these. I would strongly advise against using a 15W50. If all else fails read the manual.

Hmm, the Penrite site suggest's 10W40 for the FZX250 Zeal?

Photo below taken from the 3LN3 Service Manual supplement, not sure what the 3LN1 has listed

2L for an oil change (no filter)
2.2L for oil and filter change
    2.7L after an engine overhaul

    Manual say's

    Check engine oil
Start and run vehicle for 2-3 minute's at idle
Turn off engine and wait 2-3 minute's, then check oil level
Should be between the 2 line's on the sight glass

    Referring to the figure
use the viscosity number suitable for the outside temperature's

    20190810_222729.jpg

I went for the thinnest oil for my FZR, was $38 on special at Supercheap Auto
    I don't think i'll ever be out riding it if it's over 50 degree's C, and it rarely get's below 0 degree's here too

Go to penrite oil and look up what they reccomend for a 1989 yamaha fzr250 and it will come up 15w50 and states its the same as 20w40 but f'd if i know lol i just chucked castrol oil in it and i think it was car oil haha but seemed to work fine n no clutch slippage

Cheers for all the advice. Could only really find a 10w40 full synthetic. Anyone reckon it will be sweet as

if the specs for the oil grade reccomend 10w30 or 20w40 wouldnt it be for Japan if this all is weather related. I just came to a conclusion that 10w40 is between and about right for NZ temperatures even though it would never get that cold but it is getting hotter due to to climate change lol

Old specs on old bikes, like oils and tyre pressure , I would take with a grain of salt .... technology with oils and tyres for example have come along way since
And as u point out yourself , FZRs were JDM only

Vehicle manufacturers will recommend softer pressures in tyres to give u a smoother ride ... tyre manufacturers will advise higher pressures to give the tyre a longer life

I use Delo 400 in my bikes , my petrol Land Cruiser and I would use it in my hair dryer if it needed an oil change
Engines run smoother , quieter and it lasts more Ks than anything Ive used before .... its multifleet ,so its suitable for my high end combined harvester or my B double .. if I had one :) ..... and supposedly only the highest quality crude is used to make it

The best recommendation on what to use is what the experts here tell you so you have come to the right place :D

Trouble is its like the proverbial question ... " how long is a piece of string ? " :idk:

I have always had a preference for Penrite.
I would typically use Racing 10 in my high performance stuff.
But I have notice of recent that the spec has changed a bit and racing 10 is no longer recommended for motorcycles.
So now I have changed to HPR 5 which is suitable for most of my stuff, except my VW diesel.
It is also a little more economical.

I second what the Big Cheese said above - the Delo 400 is fantastic - I run it in FZR250's, Triumph Sprint 955, Subaru Liberty, and Ford Territory. Try it - you won't go back...

The one I pictured above is what we use

20L drums are the most economical way to buy it ... from a Castrol depot if theres one nearby

I looked everywhere to find that delo400 but just seems like its not very common here in NZ and the local repco/ Rip Every Poor **** Off only stock the dear motorcycle stuff but they stock pao/ester in 2.5l for pretty cheap but i heard that type of oil can be a bit harsh on seals in older bikes. I did find this after rummaging around in the shed. Idk tf i used it for may have been my old corolla. Its sf/cd api oil so its for use in diesel and petrol im guessing. When i i had a look in it just thinking it might be waste oil but then a nice white honey like oil dripped out that almost looked eatable. I have done some research about the api for motorcycles and read it was from sl, sj or sm oil where sn is the current api but compatible with motorcycles. Ive done alot of reading up and it sounds like any oil is compatible with motorcycles at the end of the rainbow aslong as it isnt api sl sj and sm because they dont contain as much zinc as previous or an sn oil or something. I think i seen somewhere that fzrs used an se type oil which i can see in japan for a long time as the oil quality back then in japan wasnt up to the rest of the worlds standards at the time. I just changed my oil filter and my bikes been sitting for a couple weeks now and just want to start it to get some petrol through the carbs IMG_20190821_114225.jpg

Fuxk it ima just put it in lol. Heard alot of people if any dont dont experience clutch slippage with using normal car oil. Maybe its as i i w before about the sl sj and sm oils.maybe you just avoid those oils bit who knows il try it and let everyone know
