    Hi all, I recently acquired an 1983 SRX 250 is pretty ordinary shape, but thats ok, the price was right. Pulled it apart, tidied it up and put it back together again fixing up bits as I go along. Got it to running stage again but by the sound of it and a compression test it has some arthritis in the engine department. I have contacted a couple of guys in this forum and got some valuable info from then re parts etc so now it will be pull the engine apart and see whats needed, and then go hunting for bit. Have yet to decide which direction to go, full restore or custom job, I know its worth more as an original but not real concerned about this aspect as I don't intent to sell it in the foreseeable future. I am not new to 250's but past ones have been dirt orientated, mostly had big and medium road bikes, now own 2 scooter for transport and touring(one is a big one) and when this bike came along, I thought, "why not" anyway we will see where we end up.     Thanks mate, its not too bad but it did/does have some issues :( but I am working on it :)

    Welcome Oigy. @Andych should have an oversized piston for your bike if it needs a bore.

    Thanks mate, yes he has told me that, will know more when I open the engine up, it was running when I got it(and still does) but it is low on compression so will investigate :)

    That could easily be valve issues, valve clearances as well as piston ring issues.. so dont read too much into actual compression readings. Far better to do a leakdown test to determine where the issues are.
    Being noisy could be Cam Chain related. Maybe check how good the tensioner is. If you are going to pull it down best to make sure you change the cam chain.. it is easy enough when it is apart.
    The noise could also be clutch basket rattle.. so many potential noise areas on these little Thumpers :)

    I am not going to bother with a leak down test, will pull it down and check it all out, bore, piston, rings, cam chain, bottom end clutch and also the valves. Its not valve clearance as we reset them to specs before I put it back together, I was hoping it would be that simple but alas, not so. No problem, I don't have a time constraint but I do have a budget so we will see what the story is shortly. I put it back up on the stand in preparation for the pull down. :) I have a factory manual so have all the appropriate measurements etc :)
