Yeh, I've seen that too. It's almost like the valve face gets bashed and rounded (in) and causes a poor seal and compression issues. Once we do the compression test we'll know what we have to play with.

My advice - pull the head, inspect valve and seat. Recut / grind as necessary and you can grind the tip of the stem within reason (clearances of bucket and collets in mind) to get sufficient clearance.

Valves would most likely be the "sacrificial" item with the seats being hardened... much easier to replace valves than seats.
and they are going up and down at a reasonable clip when at 16,000 RPM or higher with reasonably high valve spring pressures too...

If you get stuck, you could alway's have your valve/s reconditioned, get someone to stellite weld the sealing face's and regrind them

What plugs and gaps are you running in your FZR?

With the cop's i have CR8EIX's standard gap is .81mm, the GSXR that the coil's originally come off had resistor plug's standard, and i thought i'd try the Irridium's
I have been running the same coil's and Irridium plug's since November 2016 now.

Slightly more productive day today. Compression test showed a couple of pots have low compression that jumped up with the addition of some oil. Cold test showed 150psi in Cyl 1 & 4 and low scores on the other 2. We decided to continue with the bike, but also had a play with the Chief's FZR, which we got running, but the consensus is that it has poor compression, which is causing the starting issues. Once hot, the bike starts on the button everytime.

Got the engine in the ZXR and tested the electrics. Called it quits once we had the motor turning over. We'll attack it again tomorrow. Thanks to @Grasshopper who came over and helped. Much appreciated mate.

    Onward and upward.

I agree 100% with what he says about using stainless steel valves. I used them in road and racing engines with great success. But I used them with bronze valve guides. If you coat stems then cast iron guides might be okay.

That’s an expensive looking shed @GreyImport.
Might be a bit breezy in Winter though.

So everyone nags to 'build the ZXR' .... so now when thats happening everyone nags about the working conditions ?

Which is why I told every fukker that theres nothing , or very little happening on the bike building/fixing till I have a WORKSHOP .... which one day might happen if I wasnt continually pissing about with BIKES!

Some of u are worse than a menopausal wife

    :headbang: :fuckyou:

They're good articles Blair. I too agree with Mr. Nixon. I try to set the valve clearances up toward the higher end of the spec and good average compression is also a must. I think if we did a compression test on Brian's FZR we'd find an odd combination of 2 cylinders with poor compression firing one after the other. The ZXR firing order is 1-2-4-3 and the cold comp test gave 150-75-90-150 across the 1-2-3-4 cylinders. As I said to the Chief, if we had poor compression on following firings, I wouldn't have bothered. But, since we have a good firing every second firing, then we should have enough to start the engine and let it warm up to increase compression in the poor cylinders. This is just my opinion, so I might be talking bull plop, but we'll see how she goes (or not) tomorrow. The following is the valve sheet for the ZXR engine. A lack of correct diameter shims meant we had to go with whatever we could get away with.

I was suggesting the ZXR valve seats are so small that it's more like microsurgery.

Well done on all the work! I have poor quality shed and a ZXR (or 3) that need work, if you're heading this way at all?.... Be warned, I'm not as likely to as much work as Grey. Or any. :-(

Thanks @my67xr it was a bit hot (and muggy) in Tamworth today. I think it was 32. I can't say I'm happy about the outcome with the ZXR. The engine was running nice (no smoke) and was idling well even without an airbox and carb balance. Anyway, hopefully the chief will find a replacement fork or stanchion and we can race the bike at the first drag meeting in 2020. Thanks to everyone who helped out and those that gave vocal support. Cheers Frank
