    Hi there,
My name is Andy and I have two bike projects at the moment. One is an Yamaha XS250 which I want to make into a scrambler style bike. I am well on the way with this and will post a seperate thread for this. The second bike is going to be challenging as it is missing a lot of parts and I know it's going to be a challenge. But I am up for it and the thought of taking what is effectively a basket case and giving it a new lease of life is what is going to spur me on.

So I'm having to continue my post because i didn't hit the 7 minute limit on editing the original post. I'm going to have to abbreviate it now. The bike is a 1wg frame. Clea

I need to find out where the engine number is? Should it be matching with the frame?
How do I establish if it's going to be worth sinking some money into?
I am not against spending money as it really ticks the box from a retro point of view as this was the time i was obsessed by two stroke motorcycles. This shows by the artwork i created at the time. Sheene, Rainey, Doohan...

Welcome to the forum. It is an FZR400 3EN1. It can be easily be distinguished from the 3EN2 by the swingarm. Parts are hard to get because there were never a lot of them made. Best place to get them is the Japanese auction sites. The engine and frame number will not match.
This pic is from the genuine parts book.

So is it rare? I really don't know, and to be honest it doesn't make a great deal of difference, but just an added bonus and will give me a little more confidence that i can chuck some serious cash at it without looking like i am an idiot. Thanks for your response :)

Its cost £150 so no great problem. I'll just try and get it sorted either way ;)

Maybe look for a crashed bike to use for parts.

Is that all the bike you have, no other bits around ?

There is an awful lot missing from those pics that i see, also when you remove the tank cover, is there carbs ? air box ?
I know there is no tank.

I think Murdo is spot on, look for another parts bike of some kind, and between the two work out which one is better.

The FZR400 i got was complete when i brought it, needed some work. But even some of the bits i had to find, we're extremely hard to get here.

I know some of my parts came from the uk, so it was a bit more popular there. But still lots of things to chase.

I picked up a full running 3EN2 recently, great bike - lots of fun. Hard to get parts in Australia though, they pop up sometimes. Lots more parts in the UK - look around (particularly in the FZR400 owners group on facebook). More than you think.

In terms of value, I would say not really worth much - so don't blow the bank on it. I've seen them go running and needing a clean up for £500-750 in the UK. They weren't the most reliable or popular bikes and they can be really fiddly... but I cannot get by my emotional attachment - they are so much FUN!!!!

    Good luck!
