Actually that's an incredibly sensible use - I know someone that breeds cattle and they muster with horses so as not to spook them with engine noise from bikes

I have two words to say about electric motorcycles, so I won't say them.

Well, you could probably say those two words about that bike and most of us would agree with you.

Seriously though, this is why China has the world by the short and curlies. Make something so cheap that an importer thinks they'll make a huge profit selling them at 200 to 400% markup and then hang up the phone when it all goes tits up and the retailer can't offload them. And, if it does go well, then raise the cost price and squeeze the importer/retailer. Great business model. My guess is those electric bikes cost AUD1,000 landed, at the most.

I won't go on about it, but just one post, which I'm sure Murdo and a few other trail bike riders will be aware of...

Years ago, when a thing called a 'pit bike' popped up on the radar, a mate who had land in central Victoria bought one for his son. He paid $599 for it brand new from a retailer in Melbourne. It was a 250cc unit which looked a lot like a proper trail bike. Spoke wheels, knobby tyres, long suspension etc etc. I visited my mate one day on the way back from the drags and I couldn't believe you could actually build a bike and sell it for that much. I had pics of it somewhere, but I can't find them, so the stock pic below looks pretty close. The only difference was my mate's had indicators and he had registered it (agricultural registration). I took it for a ride and instantly realised this thing looked good from afar, but was far from good! It was gutless, had crap suspension and the list of issues (in my mind) was a mile long.

But, for $599 it started first time (electric and kick starter) and, if you just wanted to go from paddock to paddock or down the dirt road to your neighbour's place, it was fine. I recall going to the retailer to have a look myself. When I asked about the $599 bike, they laughed and said it was now over $1,000 as the supplier had put the cost price up. Given that every person at that retailer was Chinese, I wondered about the supplier/retailer connection and if initial sales were lost leaders to get a foot hold in the market. The number of Mercs in the staff car park made me think profit margins were substantial, but that's speculative on my part. The bike I took the below pic from had a RRP of $1,899 (plus $250 if you want them to assemble it). Anyone on this forum have one and want to comment? After all, it is a 2fiftycc!

We have a Crossfire dealer here and I wandered in one day with time to spare to look at them. Nobody came near me to ask the price, but when I looked at the frame welds (where they had ground off the porosity, yuck) I quickly exited and have never looked in there again. One of my grandsons has an Atomic (small wheeled 140cc, pig of a thing to ride but nice snappy engine) and it has nice welds, good design, nice paint but crap plastics. It was only $350 in the box.

I believe the crossfire cfr250rr is a Honda copy that you can put actual Honda CRF parts in. Some of the Japanese bikes are made in china. Makes me wonder if the cheap Chinese ones are just start/end of run or Monday units where they think it isn't up to spec. The cfmoto 650 is basically the Kawasaki 650. Some people said that the trick to put bikes was to pull the engine down and re-torque the bolts with loktite. I did have a pit bike, still have part of it, they suffer maltreatment poorly because they are cheap, so good maintenance can help. But a dud is a dud. My 2 cents

Picked both of them up with a very slight cash adjustment in a swap for the Postie Bike :)
Plus the seller is delivering them to me this afternoon.

    Nice little 125. :thumb_ups:
The hardest bit to get (the muffler and heatshield) are there.

Muffler and heat shield are there on one but missing on the other bike.
Seat and side covers will be hard to find as will front guard and taillight. Plus t will need a speedo but have a look at the internal condition of the tank.
Even the second tank looks half reasonable.
One kicks over with what sounds good compression.
Ratty electrics but that is to be expected I guess.

One came up for sale a few years ago, so I looked into them (Google research). It seems they aren't a good bike. The design was kind of flawed, they had the middle conrod made heavier to try to balance the motor, but I think that led to other issues, too. Being an old Honda, parts are probably discontinued. Do your own research, All I remember is I was best to say away from them!

The seller wants $5,250 for it!? I might pay that if it was fully restored. What is it about people with old rusty bikes? Do they not realise there's a thing called the internet and anyone can use a Search Engine to find out details about almost anything?

Here's a nearly finished one for $8,000. Read the item comments "Restored MVX goes well still needs a couple of little things to finish I just can’t source them". If the parts can't be sourced, then you're stuffed.

    https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/yellow-rock/motorcycles/honda-mvx-250/1236061333

Good article about the bike and a race version. States "very rare and very fast", but you still need to get one running.

    https://raresportbikesforsale.com/tag/mvx250/

Old Gold Motorcycles had one for sale years ago. If you've ever bought a bike from Old Gold, you know they have substantial markups on their bikes, so given that price ($2,999) it was a bargain.

    MVX250.jpg

Don't get me wrong, I like this bike as it's basically a VT250F with a 49hp 2-stroke engine in it. Great, except it's fragile as @ShaneP inferred. I saw one going around at Broadford a few years ago and it was certainly not slow.

If the parts are available to get it running and keep it running it doesn't look so expensive to me. Look at what sort of prices the Yamaha RZ 500 and Suzuki RG 500s are commanding, pretty sure parts availability for either of these isn't too good either. As I suggested in an earlier post, kilometers on most 2 strokes are just about the most expensive kilometers you can do on any mass produced motorcycle. Fast wearing, fragile engines, extremely thirsty, horrible for the environment, But also way too much fun for committed owners to worry about their foibles.

Yes, I agree @Gizziracer but the point I was trying to make is that asking over $5,000 for a rusty POS that doesn't even run is a bit much. The $8,000 bike seller was originally asking $10k and I'm keen to see how low he eventually has to go to make the sale.

The $8,000 MVX is also registered and as the listing says..."Restored MVX goes well still needs a couple of little things to finish I just can’t source them . Comes with another frame and a couple of motors, very rare bike haven’t seen one in this condition for sale in years price is 10k because of its rarity 0410442092".

I'd pay the $8,000 just to get the bike and the extra frame and engines.
