Help 1999 Yamaha FZX250 Zeal TDC?

    As there is wear on the cam I don’t want to cause anymore issues by starting the bike until I’ve made the adjustments, the carbs were replaced late December last year (seller provided receipt) so at least that’s one less thing to worry about. After I’ve adjusted the clearance I’m going to replace the gasket (old one is very brittle), replace the clutch cable (old rubber near top where the bend is has turned to putty and coated the cable), throttle cable (still sticking even after oiling), hoses on either side of the fuel filter (partially melted atm), carefully solder a pinhole on the gas tank, I also need to thoroughly clean and re-coat the inside of the tank, new tyres and I’ll get a professional to do the brakes. I’d rather do preventative maintenance than get stuck somewhere. Anything else I should be servicing or checking?

    Sounds like a plan. How much wear is on the cam lobe? Can you post a few pics.

    After removing the cams and closely checking the lobes.. they are very smooth with no wear.. phew!

    The figures within the circles are the current shim size, the figures under those are current valve clearance. I picked an optimal figure and subtracted the difference from the currents shim size.

    You should aim for clearances at or near the maximum value, this gives you the best compression figures and most time between adjustments. So 0.20 for inlet and 0.30 for exhaust

    As all your clearances at 0.08 or 0.05 they are all very tight and you should be replacing all 16 shims.

    Some of the shims you have installed already will be suitable to other positions to get the correct clearance, you won't need to buy a full set of 16
    As others have stated definitely go for the upper range of the clearance

    Had it all put back together only to realise that I’d jammed the chain somewhere (facepalm)

    Try rocking the crank back and forth a little by turning the stator

    I think I’ve turned the crank without tension and put the internal gearing out of sync

    Did you rotate the crankshaft or the camshafts while you had the cam chain disconnected?

    Could I have lodged the chain beside the damper or dislodged the damper?(1hx-12252-01)

    With the camshafts removed, all the valves are closed and there is no danger of valve to piston contact.
