A useful tip I learned in my studies for testing stators. Along with the usual resistance and AC voltage output checks, an insulation check will reveal a problem when it otherwise tests OK. What you do is use a battery, a headlight globe, and a meter in series with the stator and test for insulation breaks as normal, between phases and from phases to earth. If the globe lights up you have a short. This is a good test because most meters will only apply about 1.5-3 volts and hardly any current, using a battery and globe means it will pull a few amps and light up the globe if there is a short. The globe is there as an indicator, and so you don't up a full battery's worth of amps through your electrical system if there is a short.
Well I got married and bought a brand new bike. Things change! Today I was working on an XT600E with a misfiring problem. After overhauling the YDIS carb and replacing the inlet manifolds it ran worse. As the miss was on throttle open and not overrun I suspected an electrical problem. My boss suspected a problem with my carb work. I was right 3x broken wires to the TCI.
Played with the SL125 a little today when it stopped raining.....I was going to try and start one of them but have decided it’s not worth it as I am going to fully rebuild the engine anyway... interesting that the PO said this one was a runner...not sure how when you see inside the carby. Hmm no float or valve... yep it was a runner. Then there is the wiring... this lot was covered up with Mastic wrapped in tape..... REALLY!! And the Regulator connections... You really do have to wonder at the ingenuity of people who want to go bush bashing... I wonder what they used to do the dishes... At least the carby off the other bike wasnt too bad internally.. idle circuit is fully blocked though.
Did some work on the drz400 today, I found some broken wires to the voltage reg and found the side stand switch wires cut. I stripped and cleaned the carb, installed a new battery and fitted a new throttle assembly and handle bars. I also found the carb to airbox boot had holes in it so that will need to be replaced. Will try and get a new plug for it tomorrow and will hopefully have a running bike. The good news is that there are heaps of spares on gumtree so it shouldn’t be too exy to fix the last few things I have been doing the work at home, I miss my tools at the shop
Yesterday was meant to be a day to work on my bikes; I did about 10mins work. But I did have a good time at the interruptions, went to baptism, had some interesting conversations, went bike riding (mountain bike riding: yuck to pedalling, but my fitness isn't too bad). Oh, and I'm buying a ZX-6R! Mostly because I don't fix the bikes I have.
It looks like that poor little SL125 has seen a lot of abuse over the years. You have really got to question the maintenance skills of some people. The ZX-6R looks nice.
Speaking of not fixing my bikes: I got the CBR 400 to start and run today! Needs a bit of work, still, so it is still a while to go.
