Hi all I know this is primarily a 250CC forum but the folks here have been great with sharing knowledge and welcoming to new members. So I wanted to share my other project I am working on. I came across this ' 94- ZZR1100 for about €1200. it was in storage for a long time and needed a bit of TLC. The main issue was the petrol tank which was the most rusty piece of crap I have ever seen. When I bought the bike the tank didnt look too bad until... I took off the tank for closer inspection and found a mix of rusty sludge and holes. spoke with some welding guys and they reckoned it was an unsalvagable POS so bought a replacement and resprayed it. Anyway the bike is running and thanks to the great guides here I was able to do the fork seals and normal service items without much problems. Next on my list is to service brakes and to take out the carbs and strip them down. If possible and ok with mods here, I have the ZZR1100 service manual and a bunch of other stuff I'd like to add to the resources section to share with people. let me know what ye think! cheers
Nice buy. I've built a couple of them in the past. Including for speedway sidecar use. The weak point is the tensioner for the alternator/starter chain. It has to work in two directions. It's known to be vulnerable to kickbacks when starting. The starter drives the crank so from memory it then works on the top run of the chain. Once started, the crank drives the alternator - which is on the same shaft as the starter clutch - so the tensioner works on the bottom run of the chain. The first versions of this family - the GPZ900 - used a narrow,light chain. By the time they got to the ZZR1100 the chain is much wider and heavier - and gives the tensioner fits. I think there's been at least 2 versions of the tensioner. Worth checking for a possible update.
