I think all the projects I start writing up here go no further - if you're interested in buying a CBR 400, watch this space.... So, I finally got a 400cc 4-cyl Sports bike (would have preferred a green bike, but ZXR 400 are even rarer here). The guy I bought it off said he got it to run. Seems to be complete, maybe missing the ignition lock. Hope the tyres are ok, don't want to buy those. But I've just wheeled it into the shed and I have no start date for any work. Especially given the mosquitoes at nighttime!
So. I have cleaned the carbies, finally. It'll only be a matter of weeks and I'll have them installed and try connecting a battery to see if it will start... This is progressing slowly. Sigh.
2 weeks, it seems. Carbs installed and bike started! The bidding shall start at... Kidding. I think first offer would go to @kiffsta as he put me onto the bike and done a few good turns for me. Thanks. I had video, but it's too large to upload, and I'm not uploading to YouTube. Still months away from the road, especially given some other projects.
Well, the engine seems to be ok, now the rest of the bike. Fork seals have been leaking, so they'll need doing, as well as looking at the brakes, seeing as it looks like the rubbers are swollen. But I'll need a hand to get it on the ramp backwards, to do the forks, so I don't have to work on the floor. Trying not to spend money at the moment, so need to do work without buying parts, but at the rate I'm going, I might put $10/week aside and I can afford the parts by the time I get around to do anything more! 7 months and I've cleaned the carbies and mostly reassembled the airbox. I guess that means next update will be Easter?!
I still have it, still working on it (well, more like still planning to work on it), but it hasn't been started in a while.... Getting ready to put it all back together, service and maybe a roadworthy. Should be done by Easter... Can't rush these things, apparently.
I did some! Went to start it, it wasn't firing and the battery was running down, so I decided to oil the barrels and change spark plugs, then remembered this: Unblocked muffler and new plugs worked, she started and ran! Take it for a test ride? The brakes don't work. I tried flushing and bleeding the front brakes to no avail; it's going to need seals. Rear brake: no good either. Pulled the rear apart, piston stuck up. Knocked out out, cleaned up the piston and cylinder, greased (with rubber grease, of course) and assembled. Rear brakes sorted I turn to the fronts, again. Well, I left a connection loose, that's going to cause pressure lose. Bleed, tighten connection and I front brakes, too! The neighbours have a long bitumen driveway, off public road, my test road. It is a nice motor, good power. Just need to finish servicing and mount the bodywork. A job for Monday
Oops. So it turns out that I had forgotten to check the VIN when I bought it... A check yesterday revealed that I wasted my time putting the road gear back on: Statutory write-off. Track bike, anyone?
Wish it wouldn't be ungodly expensive to ship here! This state will title damn near everything without question.
Seriously. Who makes the assessment to right off a vehicle??? Is there serious structural damage that would make the bike unsafe to repair and ride? Or the vin/engine number have been changed and lifted from another vehicle? I do not follow the logic in righting off vehicles that can be satisfactorily be repaired, economics aside.
NSW everything is statutory write-off, no repairable or economic write-off that can be reinstated. It was meant to stop rebirthing stolen vehicles. Qld is also going statutory only. Good if you're a wrecker, hey @kiffsta ?
It's a very silly strategy, the outcome is uneconomic and insurance premiums will sire astronomically - I did get Mum's car off the WOVR, but it cost more than it was worth in the end, BUT that was because I rebuilt the entire engine for her 70th birthday - it has sentimental value as well a lot of work
Just realised - it's a bugger that got written of in 2010 because if it was 2011 it would have been over 15 years old and vehicles that old do not go onto the WOVR EDIT Honda didn't make the CBR400RR in 1996 - that vehicle was manufactured before then I think there's an argument that it's not legally on the WOVR What is the actual date of manufacture?
It's an '87 model. To reverse it might be headache, but that can be someone else's problem, if it sells.
It was 23 years on when they put it on there - that was their mistake, but you're right - they will be complete A__holes about it
If you feel so inclined, the vehicle age was 23 years old [factually correct] at the time it was listed which is factually incorrect on the basis that vehicle less than 15 years old are put onto the WOVR, that would be the basis of the argument - unless there is somewhere in the legislation that specifically says the date of compliance. Consider - someone imports a restored Model T ford, compliance 2021, it would be nonsensical to argue that vehicle is less tan 15 years old, BUT some of the bureaucracies excel at arguing nonsensical. Honda could actually help you out if they provided a document which states that the vehicle was manufactured in 1987, which is just factual. If you had that to start with... EDIT - I just checked a few sites, it is from the date of manufacture, not compliance, someone with a bent for arguing with bureaucrats may get a bargain
