Our own little FZR250.com gallery which is part of this site. There's some damn nice bikes in there; many owned by FZR250 members and others are just internet 'samples'.

The ones on the fizzer just circulate fresh air around the top of the engine and under the fuel tank mainly for cooling and also acts as a very basic F.A.I. setup.

The front intakes on the ZXR250 are fake and do just about the same thing as the FZR’s. I think the air intakes for it are on the sides of the bike I think but they don’t function as a ram air intake.

On the 3ln's the plastic ducts just twist into a hole in the frame and that’s it.

Correct... The FZR250 for some reason unknown to any mechanic dees not strech nor brake the cam chain... but they do have their big ends driven through the engine block.... but when compering to the MC14 engine used in the CBR250... it is still a more realiable big end... it is the Kawasaki engine used in the ZXR250 that has a problem with the cam chain... but oddly the valve clearences are very stable...

So if you want a very realable engine go for the FZR250 but maintain it well and often...

ok is there a guide for regular DIY maintanence on this site? like maybe a list of things to check and how? Im thinking on cars you would do things like change oil and filters and replace lubricants, spark plugs and check brakes. is it similar for bikes and in particular fzr250s? how often do u guys do ur regular check ups?

Ok I htink this should be put in to the HOW TO things... but:

EVERY DAY: Oil lavel (how simple is that there is a window to look at!)
    Air preasure in tyres.
    Indicators
    Stop lights & rear lights
    Head lights & high beam
    HORN

    Every 3000-5000km:
Oil and oil filter (I would seriously NOT ride a bike over the 5K mark)
Check levels of lcoolant & brake fluid
    Check brake pads

    Every 10,000km
Air filter (paper) 5,000 km (reusable)
Spark plugs (or every year if traveled under 10,000km)

    every year new brake fluid

every 2 years (or if leaky earlier) fork oil...

    similar reply is <!-- l --><a class="postlink-local" href="http://www.fzr250.com/viewtopic.php?p=6400">viewtopic.php?p=6400</a><!-- l -->

Feel free to add to that other post (it's a sticky in the how-to section). As for the 'how' - in the how to section there are hows for most common things (and if there isn't you can add one <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> )

Speak for your self. My bike is getting booked in to sort out a suspected cam chain / tensioner problem in a couple of weeks. I am hearing a rattle / knocking noise when the engine is warm and at idle. I would love to know how to check if it is the problem or not myself but failing that I will have to trust the mechanic, not something I do unless I cant help it.

For your sake I hope it is only the tensioner needing a little love. It's an easy inspection but very expensive for anything more. Not really any short cuts in removing the cam cover, cams and tensioner and then inspecting the chain and guides. Then putting everything back.

Replacing the chain involves removing half the engine so you can access the crank sprocket. If I had a FZR250 with a worn out cam chain or guides the only work I'd be doing is printing a sign saying "4 Sale".

    Woah that doesn’t sound good.

How much would replacing the cam chain and or guides cost?

Umm, I think it is a little more than half the engine...

On my bike it is pretty much a complete tear down, unless you want to go with a cam chain that has a master link in it. Then it is nothing more than doing a valve adjustment (cause the cams have to come out anyway) and making sure the crank is in correct position at TDC (which you should always do before reinstalling the cams).

Granted, that is the watered down version. Plan on at least $200 for a gasket set maybe? That's what mine costs.
