Hi, i am thinking if getting a FZR 250 as my next bike. I have seen on the internet reading reviews and stuff that these are rare bikes so parts would be hard to get a hold of? and was wondering what sort of MPG these will do and how reliable they are.

    Thanks

Firstly, i'd highly recommend atleast putting a country for your location (in your Profile); so we have some sort of an idea of where your from.

Assuming your reference to MPG means your not in Australia.
For fuel consumption... i can't off the top of my head convert to MPG but i can say that the average fuel range of FZR250's here seems to be between 130-200km's for ~10-12L - so about 15km /L.

As for parts, in Australia the FZR is becoming more and more common (still not as common as Honda CBR R/RR). Internationally, i think that the UK & Ireland appear to have a 'few' FZR 250's around (judging from the UK/Irish users on this forum).

Parts can almost always be sourced off eBay if your desperate; or i think a few of the Australian wreckers do occasionally ship internationally (Southern Cross Sports).

I don't think you should be overly concerned regarding getting parts. They do exist, it just might take a few calls & emails to get them.

Our UK and Irish members don't seem to have too much trouble finding parts; as a matter of fact there's a For Sale thread that was posted a few hours ago for a heap and a half of 2KR FZR parts!

Ah ok then, cheers, can these bikes be restricted to 33 BHP as i am 18, so it might have to be restricted for 2 years. Are kits availible or can something be changed in the exhaust or engine?

Restricting it to 33bhp wouldn't be very difficult, but it wouldn't be easy either. You'd have to do something to restrict the air flow and then re-jet it to suit - the exact opposite of what most people try to do.

How accurate does the restriction to 33bhp need to be? Are they likely to put it on a dyno for the MOT?

you'd probably need an egineers certificate to say it's been properly restricted.

I know we do here for bikes over the legal power restriction.

I may stand to be corrected here but, FZR250 only kicks out 24 bhp does it not.

40-45 hp depending on which stats you read. ~25 Nm of torque though.

    I stand corrected.
Only my YZ is billed as putting out 32Bhp and it's got WAAAAYYYY more grunt than the FZR. Best find a dyno methinks.

Or i was thinking if i did get one, i could leave it full power and ride it like this, but then i was thinking would my insurance be invalid because i am restricted, but i have been able to get a quote for the bike quite cheap. Also i got told that this bike has the same engine as an yamaha fzx (Zeal), if this true?

    Cheers

Zeal engine is a detuned FZR engine (so yes, you were right shrubb face).
However the two engines aren't quite as similar as we may hope. The clutch assembly is very different, the carbies are different... and i'm sure there's other major differences.

You could always take that chance but it may end in tears.

    welcome ritzah!!

im over in ireland and even tho i passed my test laat year im still on a similar <33bhp/25kw lisence but for some reason i can drive an fzr. i didnt check with the lisencing authorities before buying it, over here it just depends on the ins company, they wont insure you on anything you arent lisenced to ride and in the event of an accident i doubt they'd dyno the bike to make sure it wasnt over the limit as its only a 250, they'd just be looking for undeclared mods to avoid honouring your policy.

ring the insurance, act stupid and see if they'll quote you on an FZR. once you're taxed/insured/MOT'd i doubt you'll get any hassle from the law or anyone else.

Are far as I know in Ireland it still stands as 33bhp so your insurance company will insure you on or up to a 600 cc bike! The restriction is to do with the law not with the insurance company, it makes no odds to them if you have a restriction kit fitted as if you didnt they would not have to pay out as you were not in your license restriction
