    Hello FZR fans.
I am a new user to the forum and am currently looking at buying a 1989 silver and black fzr250.

Firstly how do you tell if the bike has an EXUP valve?
The one im looking at doens't say on the bike so id assume isn't doesn't have one.

Finally from reading through the forum people tend to want to fix the valve permanantly open hence making it useless.

Any thoughts on the issue would be greatly appreciated.

im fairly positive yours has an EXUP. simplist thing to do is check the frame number. if it starts with 3ln then its defo an exup, although some of the older 2kr models also have exup

The accurate way to tell is to get down under the bike and look for a rectangular box type thing where the exhaust headers go into 1 larger pipe. If there's a box there.. that's the EXUP valve.

The easy way to tell is to turn the bike on with the key, and if you hear a 'zeeeep zuuuuup' then that's an EXUP valve your listening to doing it's cleaning cycle. If there's only a few little click click click noises then that's just the fuel pump, so no exup (or working exup atleast) for you.

Take the valve off and you'll lose power down low... Keep the valve... not sure why everyone wants to get rid of it lol.

Some mechs recommend changing the alignment so its slightly above the marker so instead of being like this o> it's like this o\/. Yeilds good results I hear... But anyway..

people want to get rid of it because it can cause some additional headaches (all easy to fix). Lots of people want to get rid of it because if you take off the original exhaust and headers and replace them with a decent aftermarket exhaust you will cut about 10 kg of weight. Obviously a great thing to do if you are racing (and are keeping the bike at 12 000 + revs)

    Thanks for all your help.

So in short is it worth getting a bike with the valve and does it make much difference?

Here is a link to the bike model I am talking about. I managed to find one on bikepoint. Although To anyone interested, i know its been written off in the dandenongs.

Also I see theres a few other Melbournians on the forum. When i finally do get my machine. Anyone interested in a cruise?

I'm confused - is that the bike you are considering, or only the same model? I am pretty sure that one would have an exup (if you read the side of that exhaust it says 'EXUP'. It is also the same model I used to own).

As for missing the exup - if you have it, and then lose it you would notice it. If you never had it to begin with you won't miss it though. You can feel the difference with / without it between 4000 - 8000 revs, but I never found it to be significant. Between 8 000 revs you would hardly notice it, and above 12 000 there are no differences (as the valve is fully open). Personally - if you had the choice of two equal fzrs (same mileage, same price, same condition) and one had the exup, I would take that one. If it means saving money for the non-exup then I may be interested in that depending on mileage and condition of course.

One final note: a stock non-exup 2kr is a few years older than one with the exup. I also personally believe that the exup valve is a good reselling point...

Finally - If you are considering buying a bike that has been written off - I would suggest making sure it has a RWC before you buy it.

    Thanks Boz.

I was considering that actual bike until the guy selling it took it for a last spin in the dandenongs and wrote it off b4 i got the chance to buy it.

Since then I have come across the same model bike with only 2000km on it straight from japan. But I still didn't know if it had the EXUP.

You have actually cleared a lot of stuff up for me and replyed in a very quick manner.

    Thanks again

Sounds good! If this one doesn't work out call Yamwreck (Bruce - (03) 9807-8376). He is a backyard dealer in Ashwood who usually has a few fzr's at decent prices. Most of his bikes will have been written off, he buys them at auction, does them up to near perfect condition, and sells them at a VERY reasonable cost.

    I'm at work and I am bored. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) --> Don't tell my boss.
