Hey,

Unlike the other model bikes I'm not too sure as to what Genesis, Exup and RR?

I'm guessing they're the "premium" parts/engines of the model(s), if you get what I mean?

I did a Google but it didn't really reveal much and gave me a load of crap.

So what makes it "Gensis"? Exup? Or even make it a RR? (Is it like FZR250, FZR250R and FZR250RR?

It's really hard to find information on this as the FZR250 was stopped in 94

To the best of my knowledge the only FZR's that got an additional "R" was the FZR750R OW01, the YZF750R, and I beleive the YZF750RR OW02. Then came the R1 and R6.

EXUP is a valve found in the Exhaust collector where the 4 header pipes converge into one.

So how do I tell if my bike has any of these features?

Is there a difference between the "FZR250" and "FZR250RR"? Or is it just the same bike?

are you saying the FZR evolved into the R1 and R6? Because my friend seems to think the the FZR turned into the Fazer.

just curious.

Genesis (from the bible - "a new beginning") came about when yamaha dramatically altered the engine style - inclining forward the cylinder banks over at 45 degrees and fitting downdraught carbs into a 4 valve head. This lowered the centre of gravity and improved the handling considerably. The current crop of yamahas R1, R6 still maintain this engine style.

I think the R, RR came about with importers putting stickers on the bikes to make them more appealing.

Well, It is hard to turn into the Fazer since it was around before the FZR. The Fazer came out in 1986 and was called FZX700S. This was one year after the FZ-line came out.

FZR's and YZF's were manufactured at the same time toward the end of the FZR line. The YZF's were more race oriented, but because of the same engine cases shows that it was a derivetive of the FZR's.

Frame and engine design changed when the R1 came out. So I'm goning to have to say that your buddy is incorrect.

Exup - this is simply a valve attached to most fzr250's (and most other yamaha sports bikes since the late 80's). It has nothing to do with the model, except being a feature on some.

Instead of talking r's, rr's etc. it is easier to talk about 2kr's (without exup), 2kr's (with exup), 3ln (with dual headlight), 3ln (single headlight). 2kr's have a steel frame, the 3ln's have a deltabox frame. Those are, effectively, the only 4 fzr models there are out there. (see viewtopic.php?t=877 )

I say don't talk about the r or rr versions BECAUSE many importers are repainting their newly arrived fzr's to be an rr or r because it sounds better (and probably to take make some cbr buyers also consider an fzr) (as Dave said above). So while there may have been a purpose to these letterings years ago, they are useless at identifying the type of fzr250 now. You can find a 2kr, pre-exup, labelled as a fzr250rr, just as you can find a 3ln (single headlight) labelled as fzr250rr.

Similarly, some fzr250's are being repainted / badged as 'r2' - again this bears no relevance on the model you are looking at.

With / without the stickers, how do I tell what my bike really has? Eg Exup valves?

My bike (to be) is a 1993 3LN, will it have these features?

Edit: Just checke out Dave's website. Looks like I'll have to wait till exactly when my bike comes in to find the actual manufacturing date according to the model numbers.

Was told it was manufactured in 2000 (told them otherwise) for them to find out that it was actually made in 1993. However, this could still be false.

Can you tell me where abouts the model number is located?

Cheers Dave, nice site. Clears things up for me.

See you on the road!

2kr is the fzr250
3ln is the fzrr250
no such thing as the fzr250rr just the importers trying to make them like the cbr250rr
If your's is a 1993 ill be the cream of the crop with exup and deltabox by rights

So, does the R1 and R6 have exup? or does yamaha no longer use exup?

like dave sead it's the 45 degrees that the motor is on and the downdraughts that are in line with the intake cos the 45 degree angle witch makes for beter flow.
I think with the big bikes thay all so went with the 5 valve head

I thought it was only the litre bikes that got the 5 valves per cylinder (ie. FZR1000, YZF1000, R1) whilst the 600's and 750's just got the usual 4 valve config.

The 750's definitely got the 5 valve.

I stand corrected.
Good to see it's not just us 1k riders that have to do 20 valve clearances instead of just 16.
