Hey Katatonic and all, just wondering - what kind of technical experience do you have? Reason I ask is that I'm keen to learn about bike maintenance also but the most complicated thing I've done is change the oil. Is bike work a possibility for a noob like me? <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: -->

    We all start somewhere!
Take your time, do alot of reading before you launch into working on a bike and you should find it a rewarding experience. First thing i ever did was change the brake pads on my car... and since then i've never really been afraid of working on vehicles. If you don't know something - ask! If your still not sure, ask for help or pay for someone to do it.

Agreed! The first time I got my hands dirty with something mechanical was changing the oil as well. While I am by no means 'advanced' I am comfortable enough to figure out how to fix what I screw up most times (normally with advice from a generic manual, here, or the brotherhood).

My experience? There it is :p

I'm mechanically minded though and know how majority of it works.

I know the basics of tuning etc just haven't done it. I was more into cars until I went back to my original dream of riding a bike. Always loved it, was always something I wanted to do and hopefully can do it until I day (like 80s or something).

My main problem has always been money though and not just to learn a lot, but to save a few bucks too I've decided to do it myself. Sick of watching a mechanic do what I can do, maybe a bit longer, but I'll be able to do it just as quick and even better. Why because you do a better job yourself.

Even if you paid the mechanic a million bucks he'd still only JUST get the job done. Nothing more and nothing less.
