If your serious about just making it louder there's two things you can do.
First of all, remove all baffling from the exhaust (if your using a stock can) and ensure that you've got a straight through path for the exhaust gases and sound to follow. Once you've done that and you still want it louder you need to remove all (or atleast part) of the exhaust stuffing. A word of caution that the stuff is essentially fibreglass so make sure you handle it with gloves and NO exposed skin, especially eyes!

check out http://www.streetfighters.com.au/ASF_HT_shor_can.asp this shows how to make a shorty can but also describes how to remove baffles, this is though for a aftermarket exhaust, but will loose bottom end power due to less back pressure.
