Hi, my wife has a great little 3ln (not sure which one but its 91 reg I think).

Anyway if she does motorway / highway cruising after about 40min to an hour of constant running the bike feels like its out of fuel and dies. If you leave it for 5 min then re-start the bikes fine again! Any ideas as to where I should start to look?

Does it come right if you refuel? Is the fuel pump working properly? The earlier FZR's will gravity feed ok to about half a tank then the pump needs to be working. This could be your problem...No guarantee though..

The charging system is good as is the batt, as for the refueling I dont think its that, you can hear the fuel pump chug away when you turn the ignition on, and the bike restarts first time without needing extra fuel, although I suppose it could be an intermitant fault with the pump.

Someone from another site said it might be fuel vaporising in the fuel lines if they are incorrectly routed, does this sound like a possibility?

If the bike dies gradually, i.e. loses power for a few seconds and then stops I would say a fuel supply issue, but I have never heard of vapour lock being a problem.

Is it posible when the bike stops to pull a plug lead off and hook up a spare plug, ground the plug body, and see if it sparks. This will at least steer you to an electrical or fuel problem..

It sounds more like an electrical fault to me and the only way to find the fault is when it has occured. Maybe check the voltage regulator as well.

I have the same problem and I'm very desperate. I run 30 min with my bike and then if I let it under 5000 rpm the bike die and if I try to start it I realize that I can not accelerate it...after several minutes of staying it start's like nothing happened..please help me because I am in a country were this model is very rarely. I forget to tell that now I have a fuel pump of fzr 1000 but before I run without a fuel pump and the situation ws the same:(...my carbies were cleaned by a mechanic but I don't understand what is "float level"....and I can not test the exup(I hear when I put the contact but I don't no if it's working properly)..... <!-- s:Biker1: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/th_Biker_1.gif" alt=":Biker1:" title="biker_1" /><!-- s:Biker1: -->

No one has yet mentioned that it may be the breather valve in the fuel cap.
If the breather valve gets stuck or clogged then it doesn't allow the fuel tank to breathe as it needs to.
Basically it means that as you run the bike and use fuel, the air in the tank becomes negatively pressurized (a slight vacuum) which means that the fuel pump then has to work extra hard to draw more fuel in. This will present itself in the form of fuel starvation after you've been riding the bike for a while.

My recommendation to test this is next time it does this is to immediately open the petrol cap and listen carefully to hear if any air is drawn into the tank. If this is the case then it's just a matter of dismantling the fuel filler cap and cleaning the little rubber flap that is the breather valve.

    Hi all,
Had the same problem with my bike, along with all the other problems that they have. I think that this is a fuel air mixture problem. Too rich or lean (possible rich). Also the air filter could be causing the problem (needs cleaning, replacing). My theory is that the spark plug is getting to much fuel and slowly flooding the bike as you are riding along and as the revs drop the engine dies. And after the plugs dry out as you sit and wait it is good to go gain. As these bikes are getting old they should be getting around 160-170km's out of a tank. Rich will get about 120km's and lean over 200km's. An electrical problem will be random and happen at different times. Also check the exup valve (if the cables are broken the exup can swing shut as you ride and cause the bike to die). Hope this information helps to get you back on the road.

It helps me very much...My mecanic clean the carburator but he don't know anything about this model because here is very rarely...and I think it can be the air-fuel mixture......also he clean the air filter with compressed air...is this the righ metod to clean it?....about the exup I don't know anything exept that it's take a sound when I put the contact on my moto..thanks for all the information:)
