    Have forks and upper triple tree removed. Checked movement from lock to lock. It seems to be smooth except that it 'notches' into the straight ahead position. Is this a fault needing bearing replacement or is it suposed to be like this?

    Any notches is a sign of a fault in the bearings, you will need to remove the bearings clean and inspect for pitting.
    If it still has ball bearings and all surfaces are smooth, just repack with grease and re-fit. Make sure the notch is gone.
    If it has needle cassette type bearing just replace the whole shebang.

    Or you can just replace the whole shebang without inspecting!!! <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt=":lol:" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: -->

    I'd honestly just replace the whole shebang and be done with it. The difference between old ratty headstem bearings and nice new ones are day and night! It'll be just like riding a new bike again.

    Replacement roller bearings (non ball bearing type) should be about $60-80 for the whole assembly if my memory serves me correctly. Make sure you've got some proper grease for it as well as you've gotta grease 'em up nicely.
