So after sorting everything out with a lot of help from you guys, I finally got my zxr running today.

She ran beautifully for about 20 seconds, just long enough for me to start thinking about all the nice fairings I was going to buy for it and how nice it was going to be to ride

Then I heard an abrupt sound and the engine stopped.
    WP_20150802_11_50_37_Pro.jpg

Snapped exhaust camshaft, snapped cam chain, a few valves seem to be permanently stuck in the cylinders, a bit broke off the cam cover which fell into the gearbox, and hitting the starter switch now results in the most miserable noise you've ever heard a vehicle make

Judging by the way the cam snapped, I'm guessing that after the last owner was done putting the cams in the wrong place and switching the spark plug leads around, he must have decided to get out his torque wrench and 10m long cheater bar and crank down on the cam chain tensioner

Anyway I'll be out drowning my sorrows in $4.50 VB tallies, if anyone's got a zxr250c engine for sale in Brisbane let me know

You could sell the frame and engines for scrap and buy another <$500 fixer upper... and keep all the other spare bits.

That would drive me nuts. I would want to know why. Time for an autopsy.
Unless the camshaft had a crack/flaw in it there is no way it should break, regardless of cycles. That leaves stress beyond normal, such as a seized or broken valve.

I agree, do an autopsy... you might find the crankshaft and transmission OK, which you could reuse or sell.

might be some salvageable parts in it, but that is nasty.

c model engine shouldn't cost too much mate, when i was looking for one there were plenty of c model engines about.

    expect 4-700.

    cheers guys

i'll definitely be cracking it open tomorrow to see if i can find out what happened, and what's still salvageable.
hopefully the piece that broke off the cam cover when the camshaft snapped didnt end up getting mashed in the gearbox somewhere
