It been some month that I try to find a good gas tank for my gsxr250rr 1989 whitout success. When looking at the vj22 rgv, It look as it can fit but I have no rgv gas tank that I can try on the bike.

Do some of you by chance have one of them ( vj21 and a vj22)that you can try on a gj73a and take pictures?

    Thank you

    I have test-fitted a VJ21 tank, it's close but a no-go I'm afraid. It's too narrow at the back and doesn't clear the carbs.

Thank you very much for your help. I try to find a good gj73a tank, and I find 3 on the web , 2 on jauce one that can bk but not shure of the condition because the translation is bad , and on on ebay.co.uk that look like in worst condition than mine. The idea of a rgv tank is because the look is similar and i belive i migth be less rusty because it is use with mixt gad.

Do you be live it is the carburator itsself that are in the way , or the airbox? The airbox can be more easy to be custom made than a gas tank. Other than this, the look is nice or ugly?

    Thank you again

From memory the VJ21 looked like a pretty good fit apart from being too narrow at the back. But it definitely doesn't clear the carbs, they are heaps wider than the bottom of the tank. I considered getting it cut and welded but figured it would be a difficult (expensive) job & probably look ugly so I just shelled out for the proper tank. Will be working on my bike next couple days so will sit the tank back on there and post some pics for you.

Not many GJ73 tanks around here in Aus either I think. My 1st bike didn't come with one and after a few calls found one locally but it cost lots of $$$. Its actually my spare tank now, I plan on using it to take a mould so I can make a carbon tank one day. After that I could sell it to you but for what I would need plus postage I think you may likely get one from Japan cheaper. But I'll post the pics & you can make your own mind up :)

I didn't have time to take the airbox off but obviously it doesn't clear this. Without the airbox it sits on top of the carbs, it would need about 15-20mm cut out of it to clear from memory. I sat it on my spare frame so you can see what a good fit it is from the outside. If you look at the underside pic you can see where the problems lie. The base of the 73a tank is wider and deeper to accept the carbs and airbox. You would need to make a custom airbox as well as cut and shut the tank, definitey a lot of work to make it fit unfortunately :(
