one thing you could try and is a cylinder head clean use threebond engine conditioner , it will clean alot of carbon out of your cylinder head. For less than $20, its worth a shot.

Run the bike up to temp, then remove cylinder 1's plug, spray threebond into the plug thread untill the foam pops out the top, leave for 15 mins to allow the foam to dissolve and do its thing, reinstall the plug then start the bike up. Lots of black stuff will come out of the pipe. Once its all been pushed through the system, remove plug 2 and repeat the steps above, then plug 3 and then plug 4 ... might help clean any carbon build up around your valves and make starting easier.

Thanks @kiffsta this is within my budget!

Have searched for three bond engine conditioner with no luck (except eBay) supercheap doesn't have it. Would like to pick it up without having to wait for the post. What kind of stores do you think?

    Thanks!

When I bought some it was from Repco ($17 I think) and you have to ask the person in the parts section at the back.
It's not on the shelf for the average Joe to use.

I think for $10 or so you can get a tool from supacheap just ensure it's the small one for bikes (don't get the dual one with the small inside the big because the big one doesn't fit in the holes heh). Yes threebond at repco, it's normally for trade use so you have to ask for it.

You may have compression issues although if your bike isn't blowing a moderate amount of smoke I'd guess it may just be valve clearances which aren't too expensive to fix if you give it a go yourself. I've never timed an across engine but I did a video on TDC (top dead centre) which will help assuming manuals are in english and shimming things just requires basic mathematics once you have the correct spec. The rest is really just torquing up bolts correctly and not losing them in the engine!

Something like this should help: http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/on...-Up-Kit-4-Piece.aspx?pid=3447#Recommendations
    or this: https://www.bunnings.com.au/supatool-6-piece-spark-plug-socket-set_p6110357
They usually come with a rubber grommet in the socket part so it 'grips' the spark plug so it stays inside the socket as you lift the socket out.
Otherwise you'll need a magnet on a stick to get the spark plug out of the hole once you've loosened it.

If you've never changed the spark plugs then now is a good opportunity to do so. They are usually $5 each from Supercheap/Autobarn.

that's a really good innings for a set of plugs, that may be part of the reason for difficult starting right there

A piece of rubber fuel hose pushed onto the top of the plug will help to get them out, and new ones in. Put some copper paste on the threads if you can to help in another 10,000Km when you replace them again.

Changing plugs on the Across can be a pain as the battery box gets in the way of getting a plug tool down the spark plug tunnel, I use something very similar to this and its one of my fav tools.

If your plug gets stuck in the tunnel after removing it from the head , push your plug lead cap back down and it will grab the plug so you can pull it out... simples !!!!

so far all i've managed is to drop a 17mm socket into spark plug tunnel 1 - which i can't get out, so now its off to get a magnet and a motorcycle spark plug remover :(
