Thought I might post a slow rebuild thread.
Picked up a 89 gixxer for 700 bucks a while ago. It was pushed into the corner of the shed and forgotten about for months.
Have just the bug to get it track ready for some P6 outing's (hopefully) in the new year.
There are a few blokes locally building up old gixxers for shits and giggles (plus bragging rights)
So I thought I had best get into it....it may be a long process though.
Personally I wanted a kwaka for P6 (I have a P5 Z750), but as I cut my track teeth on an SRAD 750 (And I miss it) I thought the 89 was good value for money and parts are plentiful compared to Kawasaki. I am still looking for a Zxr, but they are becoming rare and expensive, so not sure if that will ever happen.
Basic plan is get it running, rebuild forks and freshen up the stock bits I have (apart from the rear suspension) and see how it goes. If the motor is too tired I will rebuild it (funds permitting).
Got a few parts lying around. Like a 94 rim for conversion to 180 rear and LUST racing dogbones combined with S1000R Sachs shock to help the slow turn in (straight swap). Got full race fairing from B-spoke design in Tassy as well (great guys and great service). Might drop a 94 swingarm in (for the extra bracing and less flex) but have to look into rules a bit harder. Not 100% sure where it is headed at this stage!
The original petcock is shagged, so probably will replace it with a Pingel unit, or something to get it running properly again. Not sure on whether I will run pods or airbox...jury is still out on that one!
Anyway we will see what happens in the next few months....aiming for a shakedown around Xmas and possibly racing in early next year. Cheers
