    Hi guys

    A naked bike N00b here. I recently purchased a 2006 Honda CBF250.
The one problem I have: I always need to give it throttle + ignition to start - it will not startup by itself or even with choke on, nor will it idle.

Once its started, I tend to keep the throttle on around 2000 rpms , but not matter how long i keep it on, as soon as i let go it drops and as soon as it hits 1000rpms the bike cuts out.

Even does this when im riding in 1st gear and come to a stop or slow down below 1000. There is just no idle and when it drops it starts to "chug". It has just had a Roadworthy so maybe I need to get a full service.. I tried adjusting the idle screw but made no difference.

    Any help appreciated.

    hey Flavian11,

welcome to the forums, generally the rule of thumb is to use the choke to start your bike, you should never have to twist the throttle for it to fire up. Your idle should be set to 1400RPM when the engine is up to operating temp.

If your log book doesn't state when it was last serviced, maybe drop it in and get it serviced, then can replace the oil \ filter, clean your air filter and set your carby for you.

To be honest, I'm surprise someone issued you a RWC if it wont idle when warmed up.

    Cheers

    Chris

    Thanks Chris

The choke has no effect on it unfortunately. Funnily enough when I was showed the bike he started it without throttle and without choke.. seems to have been only last few days it seems worse. The only thing I have done since is put some fuel in the tank.

Hey Flavian11, welcome to the forum. Nice bike, can't go too far wrong with a Honda. Reading your comments about the idle, seems very strange indeed to not idle correctly. You stated the only thing you've done is put fuel in the bike, I'm just wondering if you got a bad batch of fuel, can happen? I would look at that.

When you say 'idle screw' is this what you mean ? (if this is what your setup is in the photo)

Phil yes I have had unleaded I used to fill it a little just to get it to fuel stop but it seemed to be worse after I done that. Got told I should use 91 octane and may need carby cleaned out because of fuel possibly sitting in it for few months prior to purchase.

Yes that's the idle screw that I'm talking about. Problem is I can't adjust it bc I need throttle to keep it going.

Screw it right in (clockwise to increase idle speed? ) before u start it ..... then if it runs/revs high turn it back to 1400RPM

If the bike has sat then yes the carbs could need a clean ... also if youve squirted fuel in a low tank it could have stirred up some crud .... which could have made it to the inline fuel filter ... if it has one.

    Manuals and stuff here ....

Totally agree, I would get the carb off and give it a clean this would also include fuel filter. Have a feeling that is where your problem lies. If it revs above 1000rpm's and not below your have some blockage within, sure this is an easy fix, keep us posted. Any junk in the tank can and will descend into your carb, once cleaned you should be fine.:thumb_ups:

If the bike has been sitting around for a while. I'd suggest draining the tank completely and draining the float bowl.

If it still bad, you'll need to start digging deeper. A strip and clean of the carbs will be a good start. Check the jetting to see if it's matches factory setting. For the bike to start no choke + throttle sounds like it's running very rich on the idle circuit.

Once it's warmed up, does it get worse?

Thanks guys. I will get it to honda service center on Tuesday somehow with it spluttering and stalling on me. Had to put a bit of fuel in it to get me there so just put some premium in to get me from a to b. idle screw made no difference as it still wouldn't start without throttle or idle even when warmed up. Really feeling it chug even more so when I drop under 40km or under 2000 revs. Feels like it's running out of gas so makes me also think it could be fuel filter, dirty fuel clog. I'm really new to bikes so I wouldn't know where to start with repairing so off to the shop

    Hi mate ,
Can u put your location in your profile ..... sometimes someone might be close by to help u out or know a trusted mechanic near you.

Also have a good look at the manuals and the like ..... you will find the basics are pretty easy once youve done it once or twice ..... and it will help to understand about your bike ..... also the money you save from not paying someone, you can put together a half decent set of tools that are needed.

And anything you get stuck on theres always someone here on the forum that can help.

Done :) I'm in cairns, Australia.
Yeh it's a bit daunting but if I have vivid instructions I'm sure I could figure a few minor things out.

I guess the carby and fuel lines and filter are the things I could look more into but being so new might be best to leave it to an expert!

Yea being a fairly new bike you would hope a decent service will sort it out ..... at least to get it on the road then just learn the standard maintenance required to keep it running well .... like oil and filter changes etc.

You have 2 things in your favour ..... its not 20+ years old and theres only 1 carb not 4 !
