Well I managed to get myself an 06/2006 MC33 VTR250.... man this hobby is a) addictive and b) expensive... I guess most addictions are :)
OK... so here are the negative aspects
I don't think this one is the original colour... at least the frame isn't... there is what looks to be Silver paint underneath and its hard to tell if the Matt Black was originally on this bike..
Still... as the tank is dented and it will most likely be similar cost to get another tank as it would be to repair this one and paint it again in Matt finish I will probably end up with Metallic Black tank, front guard and rear... I like the red frame... just not the red rear sets and top clamp.

They have replaced the gauges with a set from a late 90's model with no tachometer or temp gauge... god knows what has been done to the wiring to accomodate that... I can get the correct gauges either from a wrecker or brand new from ....Yep... China. I wonder if they are any good?

The headlight has copped a hit and a scrape... no big deal really.

Most of the undertray is missing and there is an LED tail light installed... badly...as are the LED Indicators.

The forks need polishing (at the top) and new seals... typical for a 10 year old bike.

The Tank is dented plus I can't seem to get the lid open... the key seems to go in far enough from pictures I have seen... (refer to mine below) but it just won't move...
Also the numbnut that dropped it managed to break the Fuel tap..(see pics) so I need to fix that ASAP so I can get it running properly.
It has a shorty straight through exhaust on it... filled with what appears to be steel wool. I think that will be changed very soon.

Last items to definitely need fixing is the front brake caliper... it is missing... and the mounting bracket.

ON the plus side... it has Renthal 789-02 Streetfighter bar and multi position shorty levers... the tyres appear to be in good nick and it fires straight up... once you get fuel into it :)

I bought it thinking a quick flip... but... I am beginning to like the idea of it... the reviews are all good in as much as they are easy to ride... nimble and economical... so really all I need to do is get it roadworthy and use if for a while... cheap transport... unless of course someone makes me an offer I can't refuse.. :) UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e95.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e9f.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e9e.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e96.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e8f.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e99.jpg UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_e8e.jpg

While the boss is out tonight I decided to have a little play and see if I could at least get the fuel cap open... YAY... success.. a WD40 soak for a couple of hours did the trick.. now if only I could get the steering lock to free up...lol

I bought this from the Central Coast... almost right on the water so there is lots of corrosion and stuff gummed up just because of the salt air.

I took the fuel tap off hoping the when they broke the handle off (well the die cast square that the handle mounts to actually) it was possibly in the reserve position... but no.. it was obviously closed and they just ham fisted yanked it around... and broke it.
I could always drill out the rivets in the front and open it up etc but I think I will just bite the bullet and get a good 2nd hand one.. $50 on Fleabay. At least then I can start it and run it properly.

If these people had bothered to get the pink slip done in May it would have been OK... but now that it needs to get a Blueslip I have to make sure everything is proper and correct... not sure what I will do regarding the exhaust though... they are 1 piece and not cheap. I do have an FZR muffle that might go on...lol

MY Garage is starting to look a little crowded... I think I need to finish the ACROSS ...soon.

Absolutely one of my favourite little bikes. I like the yellow and the red.

Does anyone know which VT250 models had engines starting with MC15E? I believe the MC15 engines were used in the early Spada, VTZ and some VTR nodels, but given the Spada was a MC20 bike I can't be sure. All the VT250F bikes I have (1983-1985) run MC08E engines, so I'm guessing the MC15E came after that. The wikipedia page for the VT250 has a bunch of info on it, but I'm sure it is 100% correct or complete. No big deal, just curious.

Bugger... I just got one today.. I had to get a caliper etc anyway.
I just wish there was someone in Croydon Vic that could pick up a Muffler for me and package it and post it... stupid eBayer says Local pickup only...
Original VTR250 muffler for $20... maybe they will answer my question and decide they can post it..

    Bugger indeed!
Time to get back on that Suzuki thing and finish it so you can ditch it and ride the VTR. :D

Haha.. yes...The ACROSS only really needs paint and the carbies sorted before being flipped.. another couple of weeks maybe.
The VTR... well if I was able to fit the caliper...bleed it and fit the fuel tap...but then it needs rego and it won't pass a blue slip with that shorty exhaust... besides... it sounds like a lawn mower with it on...

Seriously Honda... the Fuel Tap only works with vacuum.... even on reserve!!!!!!!
What a PITA to attempt to drain most of the fuel from the tank without having to remove the tap and try to balance the tank..over a funnel into a 10 litre jerry can...
ON the upside... the caliper is on and the bleeding process has started... might take a while though... lol

A few bikes have fuel taps like that, that is why I ended up modifing my VT tap.

I ended up leaving it set on Reserve and blew back through the tap into the tank and it unseated the diaphragm enough for it to dribble out.. so I left it overnight and I now seem to have a basically empty tank.. I just need some new fuel hose, vacuum hose and I can hook it all up... might be a runner tonight... :)
Then I can put it away and concentrate on the other project

I had a couple of little wins today.. well yesterday and today..
I happened across an ad in Gumtree for a set of Std Mirrors and indicators with all bolts etc for a 2007 VTR... for $20, so I jumped on that... added in a little for the seller to post it to me and blimey... it arrived this morning.
So I contacted the seller to thank him and happened to ask if he had any other VTR250 items he wanted to move and the only part he had left from modifying his was the stock Muffler.... and the price was right ... plus his GF had to come out near me tomorrow and she will deliver it... so a win on all counts...

Added to that I bled the front brake this afternoon... didn't take long as I had filled everything up last night and just cracked the brake lever... cable tied it in that position and left it overnight for the air bubbles to rise to the surface...
A little bit of "standard" bleeding this after noon and I now have a nice feeling front brake...
the pads will need changing but that is for when I need to get the Blue slip..

She is now up and running with the tank back on etc... I have found a couple of other items that will need attention.. no brake light with front brake lever... no instrument lights...
The instrument lights should be sorted when I get my new Gauge set...
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/301915789462?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

I put a request onto Findapart and so far only 2 have have replied.. 1 was $250 for a complete unit with slight scrapes...lol the pic showed it was almost worn through. The 2nd one offered me the exact same gauges as shown above.. as new... for $225 plus $25 Airbag... Really????

Anyway... I have ordered that set.. and I will no doubt need to fix the wiring...which should be fun...

Hmm I just realised I need to add a couple of bikes to my profile...lol

There is a few iterations of the MC15E engine, I have one in my 1990 VTR250 and my 1987 VT250F2H, as well the Spada, VTZ250 and I am pretty sure the newer VTR250's have it as well

I had a feeling that was the case. It's odd as the Spada has more power than the VTR250 (MC33), but use the same basic engine. Be keen to know what the differences are; I'm guessing cams. Sorry to hijack your thread Andy. I will go over to VTR250.org to find some answers.

No sweat on that... I would be interested in the results of the "more power" search is... every little bit helps :)
