How about this Vincent ridden by Beau Beaton? He won the first two races in the international challenge but I don't know what happened in race 3. If someone has some info or link about this team I would appreciate it. Phil Irving and Eric Debenham would be looking down with smiles on their dials.

    Evolution 4 (8-valve): Same base with 4-valve heads. Compression Ratio: 13:1. BHP: 186 at 7000 rpm. Torque: 142 Lbs/ft at 6500 rpm.
OMG that is one seriously wicked motorcycle.

It does well to keep ahead of all the screaming four cylinder bikes.

Murdo, saw this in the infield parking lot and it reminded me of your "How to build a Motorcycle" build project. Island Classic 2016 meeting report coming soon...

Thanks Frankster, looks to be an original Acme and still running. I am pretty sure there is another one at the museum in Nabiac, NSW. (Planning a weekend ride to the museum around May if anyone interested.)
What really caught my eye is the red and chrome Empire Cycles bike behind. I can see many Royal Enfield and BSA parts on it (from Enfield County in India, where a lot of my Royal Enfield bits came from), along with a Chinese two valve electric start engine with the dummy primary chain case on it (as I did). The front Enfield hub has been adapted to disc (same wheels I used) and I cannot make out whether it is an original frame or has been recently made. Looks to be quite a good job, but not as good as my Enfield of course.
I wonder who club rego'd it?

I have just had the most incredibly special privledge of WORKING this Philip Island International classic for a very special Aussie team.
Here is my limited report from the Garage of Bikes 19 - Shawn Giles & 99 - Steve Martin, racing 1982 Suzuki Katana's overbored to 1294cc.
These bikes have been hand crafted by a small team of dedicated people, if you ever get the chance take a seriously good look over them, they are auto-porn like no other.

We set up on Thursday, technically an open ride day but it was dominated by the whole swath of professional teams mostly from overseas who had all set up on Wednesday, we had a few limited runs as a warm up without any major issues. It was a great and promising start for the weekend!

Friday proved totally different, the weather came in and soaked the track - we fought all day to do a qualifying session but ultimately the weather was deemed too dangerous and our two qualifying sessions were cancelled and organised for Saturday morning. Big downer, a lot of 'Hurry up and Wait' happened while we all worked hard to get the bikes as watertight as they could be.

Saturday started with a bang. Our qualifying was the first event of the day, but once again the Island proved to be a dangerous mistress to defy and with the track still wet we were sent out to try and set a competitive time, Steve managed to get 2 good laps in and post a reasonable time but Shawn had a moment as another bike went down HARD on lap 2 and he pitted to call in an 'Oil on track' warning - which helped prompt a red flag after it caused another crash. However in doing so barely managed one recorded lap time which set him back down the grid.

Race 1 turned up shortly after with a reduced 5 lap distance, where we managed to post a P4 (Shawn) & P5 (Steve) finish! A great result for a first session out at race pace.
Shawn however, began to have engine issues - after lap 2 his bike began to leak oil, the crankcases were pressurising powerfully and causing a huge mess all over the back of the bike.
Frantically working to control the issue we cleaned, secured and prepared for the next race.

Race 2 was again problematic for Shawn with him barely making it through the out lap before heading back into the pits with the same issue, his day was unfortunately over. Steve however held form to secure a good result with a P4 finish, his bike proving to be a stand out of reliability for us with absolutely no issues during the day.

Overnight we set to frantically swapping Shawn's possessed engine out for a freshly rebuilt spare, finishing up about 7pm we headed home for some much needed sleep.

Sunday morning was rolling through faster than we liked, although with a little time to spare we got the Shawn's bike together and running happily. We organised with the Marshall's to let him go out with another class on the sighting lap just to get some under-load testing on the engine, it leaked. We tried a fix, sent him out again with Steve on another sighting lap and it got worse. With barely enough time to even get the fairings off before Race 3, Shawn and the team elected not to race his bike.
Race 3 came with a great result for Steve, pushing hard to get a good result of P3 - showing the real potential of his bike, with again zero issues he agreed to sacrifice his spare engine for Shawn to help get him out and racing again.

With the race concluded it was a race against time to swap engines again, with just enough time to spare they riders were set for the final race of the meeting.

Race 4 was again a show of just how consistently fast these races are, with the top riders all setting below 1:39.00 times and even getting as low as 1:37's for the front runners.
We finished with another P4 (Steve) & P5 (Shawn) result.
Ultimately, this wasn't enough for Australia to reclaim its winners title with the UK team taking a handy 99 Point lead into the end of the meeting.

This little taster of racing has just about got me hooked though! It was a huge privilege to work with such amazing riders and on a team that is so dedicated to doing great work.

I think, I'll be back next year ;)

Now for the delicious pics! I personally didn't take anywhere near as many as I should have, but the facebook page Katana Superbikes is our team, it has some sexy shots of the bikes and a couple of neat short clips.

    Bikes, roast and Phillip Island...fantastic!

Well, since MashtX did such a good job reporting on the Island Classic this year, I feel like I don't have to do a meeting report...but I will anyway. Normally I try and focus on the 2fiftycc bikes, but this year I spent more time all over the place and took way too many pics, so I will break them into parts so you can skip any you're not interested in. Part 1 is the mini bikes. This is a small group, but they bring back fond memories for many of us more senior members.

There's a number of files per post upload limit, so here's a few more pics for Part 3.
